FIRE DYNAMIC SIMULATOR

(FDS)
Lecture

Introduction
Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS), is a

computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model

of fire-driven fluid flow.
FDS solves numerically a form of the
Navier-Stokes equations appropriate for
low-speed, thermally-driven flow with an
emphasis on smoke and heat transport from
fires.

Smoke View (post processer)

Smokeview is a separate visualization

program that is used to display the results

of an FDS simulation.
To open this smokeview file double click
on file.smv.

Installation
It is free software (no need to purchase

license for this).

For free download of fds please visit this
website
http://code.google.com/p/fds-smv/
Before
downloading
check
system
configuration there is different version for
different configuration (for 32 bit or 64 bit).

Basic Hardware Requirements

The system should have a 1 GHz CPU, and

at least 512 MB RAM.

CPU speed
It determine how long the
computation will take to finish.
RAM
It determine how many mesh
cells can be held in memory.
Hard drive is only be used to store the
output files.

Procedure to Simulate any Case

Write the code in notepad file and save it by using the name as

file.fds
Open command prompt and type the path of the file:
For example your file is Desktop/New folder/file.fds.
So you have to write like this
For 64 bits computers
C:\User\student\Desktop\New folder\fds5_win_64 file.fds
For 32 bits computers
C:\User\student\Desktop\New folder\fds5 file.fds
After end of simulation analyse the result by using smokeview
file.

Some Examples
1. Research in UTP by using FDS

2. Fire in offshore platform

3. Evacuation of occupants
