1. Rationale: Why is this lesson relevant at this time with these students?
-

Teach students about diabetes: an extension to a nutrition unit or to create awareness in a classroom with
a diabetic student (world diabetes day is in November, so might be a good time to do this unit).

To introduce a unit on type 1 and type 2 diabetes.

To understand how the body utilizes sugar, and what happens to sugar with the onset of diabetes.
Compare and contrast Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes.
Recognize warning signs that help with the diagnosis of diabetes
Realize the complications of untreated diabetes such as: blindness, kidney disease, amputations, heart
disease, and stroke.
Implement aspects of self-care such as diet, exercise, and foot care for managing diabetes.

2. Provincial Learning Outcome(s): What IRP outcome(s) does this lesson develop?

3. Assessment
Lesson Outcome
What will students learn?
Students will be introduced to
diabetes, with a brief
overview about the nature of
the disease, warning signs,
preventative measures, and
maintenance of the disease.

Sources of Evidence
What product or action will show
what students have learned?
Class brainstorming sheets, starting
crossword puzzle, class discussion
participation.

Criteria
What will you look for in this
evidence?
Look for participation; since this is
only an introductory lesson students
wont produce much of their own
work.

4. Resources, Material and Preparation: What resources, materials and preparation are required?
- Print one copy for each student: http://www.diabetesresearch.org/document.doc?id=274
- Large white sheets of paper for class brainstorm (at least 2)
- Markers (any colour)

5. Lesson Development

Introduction: How will you introduce this lesson in a manner that

engages students and activates their thinking?

Assess what the students know by initiating a class discussion on

diabetes: brainstorm what students already know (use whiteboard).

Teaching/Learning Sequence: What steps and activities are you going

to use to help students acquire and practice the knowledge, skills
and/or attitudes needed to meet the outcome?

Handout:

Ask students to read quietly to themselves. (When they are finished
the can begin the crossword, but they will have time later and we will
read it as a class later)

Class discussion:
After reading through the handout, begin a class discussion on
whiteboard as well as on 2 sheets of large paper (one for type 1 and
one for type 2). These papers can then be reused in the next lesson.

5 - 10 minutes

Explain the difference between a healthy body, a body with type 1,

and a body with type 2 diabetes.
State which kind of diabetes children and teens get most (Type 1)
Name the type of diabetes that is being diagnosed more and more
often in children and teens (Type 2)
Talk about why our bodies need insulin. What happens to our bodies
when the pancreas stops making insulin or makes too little? What
kind of cells need food to work well (all kinds)? What happens if they
dont get that food? (They start burning fat for fuel. Burning fat
produces a byproduct, ketones, which are like poisons. Too many
ketones can make us very sick.)
Have the class identify some of the signs and symptoms of diabetes
(extreme thirst and hunger, frequent trips to the bathroom, blurry
vision, and fatigue).
Talk about the importance of healthy eating and exercise in diabetes
management. (Eating healthy foods and staying active help keep
blood glucose levels on target.) Are exercise and a healthy diet only
important for people with diabetes? Have the students name healthy
foods they like to eat and the activities they do to keep their bodies
moving. What are some other things we do to stay healthy? Why is it
important to stay healthy?

Closure: How will you solidify the learning that has taken place and
deepen the learning process?

Debrief/Homework: Ask family members what they know about

diabetes, do they know anyone with diabetes, bring something they
think is a healthy snack to school the next day. Students should be
ready for a longer discussion in the next lesson.

5. Accommodations (adaptations, extensions, other): How will you plan for students who have
learning/behaviour difficulties or require enrichment?
-

If there is extra class time, continue with the discussion or read through the handout and have students finish the
