CHELATING
Meaning

A chemical compound in the form of a heterocyclic ring, containing a metal ion atached by co
ordinate bonds to at least two non metalions. Chelation describes a particular way that ions and
molecules bind metal ions. According to the International Union of Pure and Applied
Chemistry (IUPAC), chelation involves the formation or presence of two or more separate
coordinate bonds between a polydentate (multiple bonded) ligand and a single central atom.
Usually these ligands are organic compounds, and are called chelants, chelators, chelating
agents, or sequestering agents

LIGAN
Ligan is molecule or ion that can donor pair of electron to Atom Pusat
The Kind of Ligan

1. Monodental Ligan : have 1 atom

2. Bidental Ligan : have 2 atoms
3. Polidentat Ligan : have more donor atoms

Polidentat Ligan
Polidentat Ligan was called Chelating, the word come from Yunani Chele
its mean Claw
Because ligan claw the metal strongly and then that formed product, and the

EDTA
Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acidis an aminopolycarboxylic acid and a
colourless, water-soluble solid. Its ability to "sequester" metalions such as
Ca2+ and Fe3+.
EDTA is used for medicine, cosmetic, laboratory application, environmental
fate.

Synthesis of EDTA
The compound was first described in 1935 by Ferdinand Munz, who prepared
the compound from ethylenediamine and chloroacetic acid. Today, EDTA is
mainly synthesised from ethylenediamine (1,2-diaminoethane), formaldehyde,
and sodium cyanide.[3] This route yields the sodium salt, which can be
converted in a subsequent step into the acid forms:
H2NCH2CH2NH2 + 4 CH2O + 4 NaCN + 4 H2O (NaO2CCH2)2NCH2CH2N(CH2CO2Na)2 + 4 NH3
(NaO2CCH2)2NCH2CH2N(CH2CO2Na)2 + 4 HCl (HO2CCH2)2NCH2CH2N(CH2CO2H)2 + 4 NaCl
