About American Studies

American Studies is a relatively new

intellectual endeavor that encompasses a variety of disciplines. At
Baylor University, American Studies
is offered as both an undergraduate
and graduate program. Students
are able to shape their studies
around American culture and ultimately choose their path within a
university setting.
The many disciplines concerned
with American culture include
communications, history, literature,
museum studies, political science,
religion as well as many other areas.
American Studies also allows teachers to expand their interests beyond
an academic specialty and allows
students majoring in American
Studies to study a wide array of
American life. The faculty members
and students approach American
culture from many directions but
have in common the desire to view
America as a whole rather from the
perspective of a single discipline.

Undergraduate Program
The program in American Studies
offers a comprehensive knowledge
of American institutions and culture and prepares students for the
world of practical affairs. The basic program consists of courses in
a variety of areas of study which
students may combine according
to their cultural and professional
objectives.
The purpose is to acquaint students with the intellectual and
cultural development of the nation,
to prepare them for responsible citizenship, and to show the continuity of past, present, and future in
acceptable cultural and historical
terms.
All students electing to major or
minor in American Studies should
consult the director before registering.

Graduate Program
The graduate program in American Studies is an interdisciplinary program offering
comprehensive study in American institutions and culture. The basic program consists of courses in American history and
American literature.
Prerequisites for graduate work in American studies include twenty-one semester
hours in any one or in any combination
of the following areas: American history,
government, journalism, literature, and
philosophy; history of American education;
history of religion in America; and American sociological problems. There is no
foreign language requirement. Applicants
must submit a General Record Examination (GRE) General Test score; a GRE score
and GPA predictive of success in this program are recommended.
Graduate work in American Studies for the
Master of Arts degree consists of thirty semester hours, at least fifteen of which must
be in courses numbered above 5000.
