Professor Interview

BIO 200 Professor: Dr. Herreid

Q: How did you decide to study biology?

A: My mother wanted me to go to medical school and I was good in science. Back in those days
the best way to go to medical school was to major in biology.
Q: If you could do one thing differently during undergrad, what would it be?
A: I am not sure. I did everything that I could
Q: What was your career path to teaching in college?
A: The idea was proposed to me by one of my professors in my final year. He told me it was just
like undergraduate school and he could get me into Johns Hopkins so I said yes. I just drifted
into graduate school.
Q: What was graduate school like?
I traveled to Baltimore to attend Johns Hopkins. Afterwards, I went to Texas to do research on
bats and I met my wife and I was happier.
Q: Are there any resources at UB that you would recommend to help me be successful this
year?
A: As Id told you during our last office hours meeting, I consider every professor including
myself a resource. Also I cant stress enough how much you should use your TAs, Advisers,
and all other staff members because we earnestly want you to succeed.
Q: What strategies did you use to be successful in college?
A: I made sure that I used my resources that were provided and studied when I could and
often.
Q: What do you see as a prime trait to have in college?
A: Diligence. Professors can tell when a student is earnestly putting their best effort forward,
and we enjoy seeing that and will reward students when we see that.
