Conventions of the Crime genre:

Mystery
Suspense
Crime is set at night, investigation during the day/continuing into the night
Police cars and ambulances
Uniforms police, paramedics, investigators
City setting
Police slang copper nicked etc.
From the perspective of the detective or victim, though often switching briefly to the
criminal
Crime involved is usually violent e.g. robbery, GBH, murder
Main detective often has a sidekick to help them solve the crime
Victims are elderly or female
Red herrings in order to divert from the real criminal and build suspense
Power struggles between parts of the police hierarchy
Police sacrifice private/home lives to dedicate themselves to their job
Riot gear
Boring aspects such as paperwork are left to those lower in the police hierarchy
