STATING CONDITIONS

What is a condition?

Referring to an action that takes place only if a specific condition is met

Two parts, (1) the antecedent = the protasis, and (2) the consequent = the
apodosis. Simplication as "P implies Q".

1. Only after/if

One thing must happen first.

It could write with but

Example: I can take a break but only

after/only if I study for an hour.


(and only if)

2. Unless

Introduces a condition that will prevent a posible outcome.

Unless=Ifnot

Example: Ill be sleepy unless I have a

cup of coffee first.


Dont have

3. Otherwise

After a suggestion, otherwise shows what the result will be if the person does not
follow the suggestion.

Example:

You should set your alarm. Otherwise, you


wont wake up on time in the morning.
If you dont (set your alarm), you wont wake up on
time.

4. Even if

Is used when a result stays the same whether or not something else happens or is true.

Example: I wouldnt join that gym, even if you gave me a free

membership.
Nothing can make me join that gym, even a free membership.

I wont come unless you ask me to.

Even if we leave right now, we still wont catch the

Only if you like classical music you will enjoy the

Can you walk? Otherwise, I will have to carry you
down to the car.
5. She can go out if she promises to be back at
midnight.
She can go out as long as she promises to be back
at midnight.
6. She will succeed if she pactices regularly.
She wont succeed unless she practices regularly.
