Tutorial/Assignment Sheet 6 (centrifugal blower and compressor)
1. Describe the (i) principle of centrifugal blower (ii) dimensional parameters of centrifugal
compressor, (iii) surging in compressor, (iv) polytropic and isentropic efficiencies.
2. State the types of vane shapes in centrifugal flow machines. Draw and explain the vane
shapes in centrifugal flow machines.
3. What is a centrifugal compressor? Write its advantages and disadvantages.
4. Derive an expression for the work done and the power in respect of the centrifugal
compressor.
5. Derive an expression for the overall pressure ratio developed in the centrifugal
compressor.
6. Define: (i) slip factor, (ii) power input factor, (iii) pressure coefficient in the centrifugal
compressor.
7. Draw the enthalpy-entropy diagram for the centrifugal compressor and briefly explain the
same.
8. In a centrifugal compressor draw the neat sketch of inlet and outlet velocity triangles for
a radial impeller of with slip and no slip conditions.
9. Discuss the characteristic curves for centrifugal compressor with the help of a neat
sketch.
10. A centrifugal blower takes air at 100 kPa and 309 K. It develops a pressure head of 750
mm W.G., while consuming a power of 33 kW. If the blower efficiency is 79% and
mechanical efficiency is 83%, determine the mass rate and volume rate and exit
properties of air.
11. A single sided centrifugal compressor is to deliver 14 kg/s of air when operating at a
stagnation pressure ratio of 4:1 and a speed of 200 revolution/second. The inlet
stagnation conditions may be taken as 288 K and 1.0 bar. Assuming a slip factor of 0.9,
a power input factor of 1.4 and an overall isentropic efficiency of 0.8, estimate the overall
diameter of the impeller.
12. In a centrifugal compressor with inlet guide vanes, air leaving the guide vanes has a
velocity of 91.5 m/s at 70 degree to the tangential direction. Determine the inlet relative
Mach number assuming frictionless flow through the guide vanes and impeller total head
isentropic efficiency. The other operating conditions are: (i) impeller diameter at inlet =
457 mm, (ii) impeller diameter at exit = 762 mm, (iii) radial component of velocity at exit
= 53.4 m/s, (iv) slip factor = 0.9, impeller speed = 11000 rpm, (v) static pressure at
impeller exit = 223 kPa (abs), (vii) take T01 = 288 K and P01 = 1.013 bar.
