Tutorial/Assignment Sheet 8 (power transmitting turbo machines)
1. What is a hydraulic coupling? Explain with a neat sketch, the working of a hydraulic
coupling. How its efficiency is varied with speed ratio.
2. Discuss the efficiency and slip of a fluid coupling. Show that slip
when is the
fluid coupling efficiency.
3. What is the function of a hydraulic accumulator? Explain the differential type of hydraulic
accumulator with a neat sketch. Define its capacity in terms of pressure p, area A, and
stroke of ram L.
4. With the help of neat sketches explain working of the following hydraulic systems: (i)
hydraulic intensifier, (ii) hydraulic crane, (iii) hydraulic press.
5. Write short notes on Positive displacement pump.
6. Discuss the hydrostatic system and its working principle and limitations.
7. How do you classify the power transmitting turbo machines? Write its applications.
8. What is a torque converter? Explain the working principle of convertor with the help of
neat sketch. Draw their performance characteristic curves and explain. Discuss their
efficiency and slip phenomenon also.
9. Discuss hydraulic press with the help of neat sketch.
10. Find out the efficiency and slip of a fluid coupling if the speeds of the driving and driven
shafts are 700 and 650 rpm respectively.
11. In a fluid coupling, speeds of the driving and driven shafts are 800 rpm and 780 rpm
respectively. Find: (i) efficiency of the coupling, (ii) the slip of the coupling.
12. A hydraulic press has a ram of 200 mm diameter and a plunger of 30 mm diameter. It is
used for lifting a weight 3 kN. Find the force required at the plunger. How much force will
be required at the end of a lever, if used, having the ratio l/L = 1/10. If the stroke of the
plunger is 100 mm, find the distance travelled by the weight in 100 strokes. Determine
the work done.
13. A hydraulic intensifier, supplying water to a hydraulic press gets water from supply main
at a pressure of 50 bar. It has to intensify the pressure to 200 bar. If the stroke of the
intensifier is 1 m and the cubic capacity is 20 litres, find the diameters of two rams of
intensifier.
