According to the Oxford Business Group, "Ajman was

formed by the Al Nuaim tribe, who migrated to the


region from Oman around 1775. Ajmans first
recognition as an autonomous state was the General
Treaty of Peace with Britain (1820). It also subscribed
to the Maritime Truce of 1835 and to the Perpetual
Maritime Truce in 1853. An exclusive agreement was
signed in 1892, placing Ajman and the other Trucial
States foreign relations in the hands of the British
government. In 1968, Britain announced its intention
.to withdraw from its Gulf treaty obligations by 1971
On 8 January 1820, Sheikh Rashid ibn Humayd Al
Nuaimi signed the General Maritime Treaty with
Britain, accepting a protectorate to keep the Ottoman
Turks out. Like four of its neighbours, Sharjah, Dubai,
Ras al-Khaimah and Umm al-Qaiwain, its position on
the route to India made it important enough to be
recognized as a salute state (be it of the lowest class:

northeast of Sharjah, Ajman is the
smallest of the seven emirates in terms
of its physical size, occupying only
about 0.3 per cent of the country's total
landmass. Ajman city and the two small
jurisdictions in the Hajjar mountains,
Masfout and Manama make up
the emirate.
The Emirate of Ajman is constituted of three
geographical regions, which are different in
terms of topographical features as well as
the distance separating them from the
coasts of the Gulf. They include Ajman City,
Masfout region and Manama region. The
climate in Ajman is generally moderate with
the relative difference among the three
regions due to the topographical nature of
.each region and its distance from the Gulf

Ajman is the smallest of the seven


federated emirates that form
the United Arab
Emirates. Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Al
Fujayrah, Sharjah, Ras al Khaymah,
.and Quwayn are the others
Ajman's area sprawls over 260
square kilometers. The emirate's
population has beene xploding
since the 1980s. It is now around
235,000. For all intents and
purposes, the Emirate is essentially
the city of Ajman, where some 95%
of the emirate's population lives.

tourist developments, with attractive

In view of its strategic position at the crossroads
of the other Emirates, its achievements in the
various economic sectors and its developed
infrastructure, Ajman has attracted numerous
investors and businessmen. Little wonder that
Ajman ranked third among the Emirates in terms
.of the number of industrial units it is hosting

Ajman extends over a distance of 10 miles (about 100


square miles) between the emirates of Sharjah and
Umm al-Qaywayn, and covers about 0.3 percent of the
total area of the United Arab Emirates (U.A.E.). The
emirate is composed of three regions: the town of
Ajman, which includes the commercial district; Masfut,
an agricultural area in the southeastern mountainous
portion of the emirate; and Manama in the eastern
.portion of the emirate
