Phi

Eta Sigma &

Alpha Lambda Delta
2013 Fall Newsletter

Executive Team

The Phi Eta Sigma executive team attended a team building retreat at Bradfood Woods.
This event allowed the team to learn about each other and become a more cohesive team.
There were team-building activities that included creating cheers, competing in different
teams, and working together to push everyone over a climbing wall.

Recruitment

You Got Caught Studying

Phi Eta Sigma put together granola bars and PES/ALD information sheets, which were then
passed out at the Wells Library during midterm and finals week. Not only did this provide a
quick snacks for students studying, but it also allowed PES/ALD to gain exposure on the
Bloomington campus.

PES/ALD T-Shirt Day

Phi Eta Sigma members were asked to wear their PES/ALD gear in order to help raise
awareness about our organization and increase name recognition. Members were asked to
share their PES/ALD pride on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram with the hashtag
#PESALDatIU. The three most creative posts on $20 gift cards.

Tutoring

Tutoring Begins

Fall 2013 marked the beginning of the Phi Eta Sigma/Alpha Lambda Delta tutoring
program. The program currently offers tutoring for 82 courses. At the beginning of the
semester, the tutors attended Tutoring Program Initial Meetings and program feedback
from various departments and students has been great thus far. At this time, all of the
tutors are PES/ALD members who have taken and received an excellent grade in specific IU
courses, but the program is open to anyone who would like to receive tutoring. The
program is looking forward to growing in size, achieving greater recognition on campus,
and incorporating outreach events with local schools in the coming semester.

Community Service
Ciderfest

In October, we helped the Bloomington Community Orchard with

their third annual Ciderfest. Nineteen people attended, and we
volunteered at different booths for this family-friendly event.
Some activities included face painting, bobbing for apples, and

fresh-pressed cider. This event brought awareness to members of the Bloomington

community to learn ways in which they can grow their own food and be more self-
sustainable!

Project Linus

In November, 15 members of Phi Eta Sigma gathered to make blankets for Project Linus.
Project Linus aims to provide love, a sense of security, warmth and comfort to children
who are seriously ill, traumatized, or otherwise in need through the gifts or new,
homemade blankets. This brought members together by giving back to a great cause and
organization.

Professional

Princeton Review

This fall PES/ALD began a partnership with The Princeton Review, a

company that helps students prepare for graduate tests. In doing so,
we are able to offer special discounts and offers on practice tests,
prep classes, and materials. We are excited for this opportunity,
which will open up new avenues of professional preparation for our
members.

Resume Workshop

Phi Eta Sigma held an open event for members and non-members to work on their
resumes. This included people who needed to polish their resumes, create a resume, or to
learn a few helpful tips about resume creation and tailoring. We focused on formatting and
successfully writing bullet points. There was also advice on how to tailor a resume for
specific job interviews.

Cover Letter Workshop

As a continuation to the professional development series, we held a second open even for
members and non-members to work on their cover letters. This workshop focused on how
to tailor a cover letter to target the proper characteristics for a specific job
application/interview.

Social

Dinner Event

A group of PES/ALD members came together to enjoy a dinner at BuffaLouies, a

Bloomington restaurant known for its wings. This gave members an opportunity to catch
up with friends and meet other PES/ALD members. The members enjoyed dinner while
discussing the various study abroad locations for which each was preparing and
Thanksgiving plans with family and friends.

JB5K Color Run

Members of Phi Eta Sigma joined to run the 14th annual Jill
Behrman 5K Color Run. This run is dedicated in memory of Jill
Behrman, a former IU student and Campus Recreational Sports
employee. The race allowed members to run together as they
were splashed with colorful powders throughout the
Bloomington campus.
