Dear North Star National Honor Society Candidate:
Congratulations on your academic success at Lincoln North Star High
School! After completing at least five semesters of classes, you are eligible
to become a member of the Lincoln North Star chapter of National Honor
Society.
Please read the enclosed application packet. This packet details important
due dates and guidelines for the required essay and professional resume as
well as the community service and leadership verification forms. Please
note that the due date for the completed application packet is on
Wednesday, November 19, 2014 by 3:15 to Mrs. McConnells TPC (A217.)
There will be a MANDATORY meeting concerning the application process
on Thursday, October 16th at 3:05 in room A207. Mrs. McConnell, National
Honor Society adviser, will answer any questions you may have and also
reiterate the requirements of the application process. Passes to activities
will be provided.

Application Requirements
Requirements for Application
To be eligible for induction into the National Honor Society, and to MAINTAIN eligibility after induction, students must
meet the following requirements:
Achieve a 3.5 weighted cumulative grade point average for five semesters in grades 9-11
Be enrolled in at least five graded academic classes
Students must have completed rigorous academic coursework
o Special circumstances will be reviewed by the NHS Sponsor
Be currently and actively involved in two or more clubs or school activities at LNS
Be a student of character, as defined by the National Council of National Honor Society
Be involved in service on behalf of others in the community
o Complete five hours of community service at a NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATION
! Provide documentation of the service on the appropriate form (service hours should be
completed between August 1, 2014 and November 19, 2014)
! Service documentation MUST be turned in with the NHS application.

Expectation of Active Honor Society Members

What is expected from you if you are inducted into the North Star National Honor Society Chapter:
Maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or higher, be enrolled in 25 credits (this includes GRADED,
academic classes)
Maintain a high level of character
Active involvement in two or more clubs or school activities at LNS
Active involvement and attendance at all National Honor Society meetings and activities

Community Service Requirement Guidelines

The NHS service requirement shall be defined as a non-paid activity completed by students for non-profit
organization or individuals in which the purpose of the activity is directed toward humanitarian, stewardship, and
community service.
Guidelines: If in doubt whether the activity will be accepted for the requirement, ask Mrs. McConnell.
Students may not be paid for work done.
Service being done for credit in a high school class will NOT be acceptable.

o GoPo hours and NHS hours cannot be the same

The five hours need not be completed in a single activity.


Activities that are done through school programs where the student is providing direct service to another
student in a school program or is supporting a civic responsibility are acceptable.
o For example: tutoring or registering student voters
Helping with school-sponsored events like selling concessions or filming school activities will not be
accepted* (*Further stipulations will be discussed at meeting on October 16th)

APPLYING FOR NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY


Deadline: Wednesday, November 19, 2014 by 3:15 p.m.
Please deliver directly to Mrs. McConnell in A217 (place in appropriate folder).
LATE AND/OR INCOMPLETE APPLICATIONS WILL NOT BE CONSIDERED.

Process to submit your Application


Deliver your application packet directly to Mrs. McConnell in TPC A217 in the appropriate folder.
All items must be in the order listed below. Please no portfolios or staples. Use ONLY paper clips.

YOUR APPLICATION FOR NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY SHOULD INCLUDE:

1) Leadership and Participation Verification Form


Completed and signed by sponsors of the two school activities/clubs in which you are actively involved.
2) Community Service Verification Form
Completed and signed by community service supervisor
Please note: These will be double-checked.
3) Resume
Please develop a resume of your high school experiences (grades 9-12)
o Include academics, out of school activities, community service, special programs or other
categories that show your activities and accomplishments. Include all LNS activities in the
resume.
o Professional quality resumes only please!
4) Cornerstone Essay
Please type a 500 word, one page, single-spaced essay on the following topic:
Describe an event in your life that had an impact on your view of one of the four NHS cornerstones.
Discuss the impact this event had on your view of the cornerstone.
This essay should be of excellent quality, content, grammar, and form.
NHS Cornerstones: Scholarship (meaning academic learning/achievement), Character, Service, or
Leadership
Please DO NOT include your name on the essay. Please list your chosen cornerstone at the top of
the essay.
Should your essay go beyond one page, be sure its printed on the BACK of the first page.
5) $10 membership dues (may be split between school years)
Please include $10 membership dues, cash or check. Make checks out to Lincoln North Star.
If you qualify for free or reduced lunch the membership fee will be waived
If you are not inducted into National Honor Society for any reason, your money will be refunded.

Notification of Acceptance

Your application will be reviewed by the Application Induction Board


o Essay will be read and scored by LNS teachers
o Essay will be scored on content and format
o NHS sponsor will verify community service and activity involvement
o NHS sponsor will rely upon LNS staff for character references
If you are selected to become a member of National Honor Society, a current NHS member will notify you by
a surprise, brief tapping ceremony
Formal induction (Date To Be Determined) @ 6:30 p.m. in North Star Auditorium
