Statement of purpose
As an engineering student I have been taught that Indonesia is blessed with vast energy
resources. My survey in remote area in Nyomplong village, West Java has opened my mind how
energy is still not accessible in many places in this country. This village only has one cable
connected to a nearby network and separated as far as 700m from the nearest grid. With these
conditions the citizens must provide their own electrical distribution facilities with very high
price.
This year I was involved in a community development program called desa binaan energy
(energy guided village) initiated by the student executive body at my faculty. Our concern is to
build a self-reliant community with the usage of energy. We help communities in remote area to
build Micro Hydro Power Plant and train them how to maintain the machine. Our recent pilot
project was held in Nyomplong village.
From those social activities I have learnt a new perspective about human security. In
contrast with the condition in Nyomplong village, electricity and fuel can be easily accessed in
my city, Jakarta. The only problem is the reduction of oil subsidy and the rise of electricity
prices. This often causes public protests and domestic instability like what is happening now in

my country. This is what I and my community always try to solve. Starting from September last
year, I and some of my colleagues created a startup called jastechindustries.com. We created a
smart home product to help people manage the electricity consumption in their home. We have
been in collaboration with some residence developer in Depok city to make a bigger impact. I
believe that technology holds promising chance to solve all aspect of human security challenge.
I realize what Ive done until now is just a tiny part of human security. However, energy
security is one of the central security issue for countries around the world. So I look forward to
get more global approach by joining AUN-KU Seminar on Human Security Development and
Energy Science. This will be my great opportunity to meet and collaborate with worlds young
agent of change and learn from energy development experts in Kyoto University.
