3. BLASTING STANDARD
The standard achieved at William Hares facility will be ISO 8501-1-2007
pictorial standard SA 2.5.
The blast standard is checked against the ISO Pictorial Standard to ensure that
the standard is being achieved.
The blast media supplier carries out a monthly inspection of the blast machine
and manual blasting facility. A technical service report is issued on the
operational condition of the machine and manual blasting cabinet, the abrasive
is also checked for any contamination, and if anything is identified during this
inspection a copy of the visit report is passed to the maintenance department to
action.
4. SURFACE PREPARATION
The items unable to pass through the automatic machine or areas not reached
will be manually cleaned using the manual recovery cabinet method, the
abrasive used in the manual blasting booth is steel grit which gives an angular
profile. This is by design, so as to provide extra key for primer, in inaccessible
or shadowed areas, such as inside end plates and horizontal cleats, as well as
large frame boxes etc.
5. BLASTING
Machine Blasting
Steel is blast cleaned through a Spencer Halsted 8 wheel roller conveyor blastcleaning machine.
The blast machine is charged with a mixture of Metabrasive S330 Steel Shot
and Metabrasive GP18 Grit that produces a blast profile between 50 75
microns.
The mixture is constantly being cleaned during blasting operations, and the
machine has a full recovery system fitted. These systems remove dust; take
out fines etc, therefore clean abrasive is returned to the feed hopper. The mix
is checked during the suppliers monthly inspection of the machines using ISO
testing sieves. The abrasive is also checked for any contamination, Surface
amplitude (PROFILE) is checked weekly using TESTEX TAPE, the results
are kept for future reference.
The operating mix is maintained by adding new material to the machines
little & often
Manual Blasting
The items unable to pass through the automatic machine or areas not reached
will be manually cleaned using the manual recovery cabinet method,
The abrasive used in the manual blasting booth is GH40 steel grit, which gives
an angular profile. This is by design, so as to provide extra key for primer, in
inaccessible or shadowed areas, such as inside end plates and horizontal cleats,
as well as large frame boxes etc. The mix is also checked during the suppliers
monthly inspection of the machines using ISO testing sieves. The abrasive is
checked for any contamination. Surface amplitude (PROFILE) is checked
weekly using TESTEX TAPE, the results are kept for future reference.

By the very nature of the process involved, surface preparation and painting is
particularly dependant on quality control procedures whilst in progress, and
for this reason stage inspection is most important.
If a pre-priming inspection results in a FAIL the item is brought up to an
acceptable standard of cleanliness.
If a final pre-dispatch inspection shows minor non-conformances, remedial
work may be specified by the inspector, which, when carried out is subject to
re-inspection.
Dry-film Thickness
Dry Film Thickness (dft) readings shall in accordance with the criteria in BS
EN ISO 12944:2007, Part 5: sub paragraph 5.4. Nominal dry film thickness
criteria shall be applied. Individual dft readings of less than 80% of the
nominal dft are not acceptable. The measured mean dft must be equal to or
greater than the specified nominal dft.
The maximum dft shall not exceed the coating manufactures
recommendations.
Refer to manufactures technical data sheet
12
CALIBRATION OF GUAGES
William Hare dry film thickness gauges are calibrated using Elcometer
standard zero plate, zero and calibrate the instrument using a shim/shims of
known thickness covering the range of the anticipated dry film thickness of the
coating to be measured and in accordance with the manufacturers instructions.
Inspection Reporting
Paint inspection reports will be produced for released items that will include
all relevant information.
Technical data sheets attached.

Weathering/service temperatures: The natural tendency of epoxy coatings to chalk in outdoor exposure and to become more sensitive to
mechanical damage and chemical exposure at elevated temperatures is also reflected in this product.
Application(s)
Special care should be taken in relation to irregular surfaces (welding seams, undercuts etc.) as
application with an excessive film thickness may result in cracking especially on such areas.
Excessive film thickness is typically more than 400 micron/ 16 mils per coat.
Film thicknesses/thinning:
May be specified in another film thickness than indicated depending on purpose and area of use. This
will alter spreading rate and may influence drying time and recoating interval. Normal range dry is:
75-150 micron/3-6 mils
Shades:
CURING AGENT 97560 will become darker during storage. This will result in darker and more
yellowish shade than grey 12170. The colour change will have no influence on the performance.
The product is also available in a Micaceous Iron Oxide (MIO) pigmented shade (Shade no. 12430
reddish grey).
Recoating note:
In case of recoating with coating other than HEMPADUR, apply a (thin) additional coat of the product
withing the described directions for recoating.
A completely clean surface is mandatory to ensure intercoat adhesion, especially at long recoating
intervals. Any dirt, oil, grease, and other foreign matter must be removed with suitable detergent
followed by (high pressure) fresh water cleaning. Salts to be removed with by fresh water hosing.
Any degraded surface layer, as a result of a long exposure period, must be removed. Water
jetting may be relevant to remove any degraded surface layer and may also replace the above
mentioned cleaning methods when properly executed. Consult HEMPEL for specific advice if in doubt.
To check whether the quality of the surface cleaning is adequate, a test patch may be relevant.

Weathering/service temperatures: The natural tendency of epoxy coatings to chalk in outdoor exposure and to become more sensitive to
mechanical damage and chemical exposure at elevated temperatures is also reflected in this product.
Stirring:
Before mixing with the curing agent stir the base thoroughly in order to redisperse any possible settling
after storage. After mixing it is equally important to maintain stirring to keep the wet paint as a
homogeneous mixture.
This is specifically important in case of a high level of thinning and/or long break in application, where
the risk of settlement of zinc particles is the highest.
Film thicknesses/thinning:
May be specified in another film thickness than indicated depending on purpose and area of use. This
will alter spreading rate and may influence drying time and recoating interval. Normal range dry is:
50-75 micron/2-3 mils. Thicknesses down to 15 micron/0.6 mils (extra thinning) and up to 80 micron/3.
2 mils may be possible. This will alter spreading rate and may influence amount of thinning necessary,
drying time, and recoating interval.
(The dry film thickness range does not take into account the correction factors for rough surfaces as
listed in ISO 19840).
Overcoating:
Overcoating intervals related to later conditions of exposure: If the maximum overcoating interval is
exceeded, roughening of the surface is necessary to ensure intercoat adhesion.
Before overcoating after exposure in contaminated environment, clean the surface thoroughly with
high pressure fresh water hosing and allow drying.
A specification supersedes any guideline overcoat intervals indicated in the table.

At the freezing point and below be aware of the risk of ice on the surface, which will hinder adhesion.
The film formation may be adversely affected by light rain, high humidity and/or condensation during
application and the following interval after application:24 hours , 20C/68F
In confined spaces provide adequate ventilation during application and drying.

Colours/Colour stability:
Certain lead-free red and yellow colours may discolour when exposed to chlorine-containing
atmosphere. To obtain full opacity, an extra coat may be necessary, especially for certain lead-free
colours in red, orange, yellow and green.
Weathering/service temperatures: At service temperature above 100C/212F, slight discolouration may be expected. The product will
become softer.
Application(s):
When specified as a one coat Direct to Metal-system follow Good Painting Practise and apply
stripe coating before the spray application on areas difficult to cover properly by spray application.
CURING AGENT 97050 : is sensitive to moisture.
Even small traces of water in the mixed paint will reduce the pot life and result in film defects.
Film thicknesses/thinning:
May be specified in another film thickness than indicated depending on purpose and area of use. This
will alter spreading rate and may influence drying time and recoating interval. Normal range dry is:
minimum 50 micron/2 mils (diluted), minimum 75 micron/3 mils (undiluted), maximum 125 micron/5
mils
Storage Conditions:
Store in a dry place and keep the can tightly closed until use.
Curing agent:
Open curing agent cans with caution as overpressure might exist.

ISSUED BY:
A completely clean surface is mandatory to ensure intercoat adhesion, especially at long overcoating
intervals. Any dirt, oil, grease, and other foreign matter must be removed with suitable detergent
followed by (high pressure) fresh water cleaning. Salts to be removed by fresh water hosing.
To check whether the quality of the surface cleaning is adequate, a test patch may be relevant.
