Performance Objective:

Develop strategies for adding 2- digit numbers mentally, calculate total cost of two items, make
change for dollar amounts.

Instructional Materials:

19 Math journals

Everyday mathematics teacher edition

Implementation:
A. Introduction:

The educator will put some multiples of ten addition problems on the board.

Students will answer the problems on their white boards.

When they discover the answer have the students hold up their boards.

B. Development:

As a class have students calculate change from $1.00

Allow students to share how they reached their answers

Explain to students that they will be buying two items:

Pencil 45 cents
eraser for 15 cents

Ask students to figure how much change they will get back on their own.

Have students separate into their different math groups

Within the small groups have the students play the shopping game on page 97 on their math
journals.

C. Conclusion:

Have students work on math box 4.6 to practice general math skills
