By making it possible to manipulate vastly more information than ever be fore, programmers have created enormous benefits for human society and greatly a ccelerated human progress. Were it not for the accumulated knowledge and experience of those progra mmers, mathematicians, and engineers who came before me, my efforts would be fee ble. As a programmer, I pledge to practice integrity and fair dealing, tolera nce, and respect, and to uphold devotion to the standards and the dignity of my profession, conscious always that my skill carries with it the obligation to ser ve humanity by making the best use of the precious resources under our stewardsh ip. As a programmer, in humility and with the need for guidance, I shall par ticipate in none but honest enterprises. When needed, my skill and knowledge shall be given without reservation f or the public good. In the performance of duty and in fidelity to my profession, I shall giv e the utmost. - The Obligation of the Programmer
