Manually Create MODS & Convert to OAI-DC XML

Manually convert the four MODS records created in the MODS exercise to OAI-DC XML
(simple Dublin Core) following the MODS mapping table from the MODS Website.
Convert the same four MODS records using the MODS 3.4 to DC Stylesheet.
Compare/Contrast the records you created manually against the records created with the
stylesheet. Where are there ambiguities and challenges in mapping data from the MODS to the
Dublin Core?
Evaluate the metadata records in terms of their overall quality and shareability.
You will submit a zipped file with the 4 MODS records in XML (updated, as necessary), 4 OAI
DC created manually, 4 OAI DC Records in XML created using the MODS to DC stylesheet,
and the Word document.

MODS Assignment (Due July 21)

No. 4
Compare/Contrast the manual created oai-DC vs. auto created DC records:
I found that the automated DC combined the <title> elements in the format of Title: Subtitle
whereas I repeated the <title> element to enter the title and subtitle. The automated stylesheet
also combined the <subject> element into one subject like the title, RailroadRailroad Station

vs. the oai-dc manual where I repeated the <subject> element. Such as, Railroad, and Railroad
Station.
Also I found ambiguity between my use of <creator> vs. automated <contributor>, and the
ambiguity between manual oai-dc <format> and automated stylesheet <type>. I also found the
difference in <dc:type> use of CamelCase and I forgot to use CamelCase in my manual oai-dc.
The loss of richness is in the <description>, <relation>, and <source>, but I did not find any
potential loss of function, just lost of detailed descriptive information.

No. 5
Evaluate in terms of:
1. Overall quality
The overall quality is good. All essential information is captured and concise.
2. Shareability
I think the shareability is good because it is in the most common usable form (DC
Simplified), but mostly because it contains all the essential descriptive information to
make discoverability possible.
3. Extent to which they can stand on their own to make the digital resources they represent both
finable and interpretable after mapping to simple Dublin Core.
I think the extent to which it is finable and interoperable is good. Although it removed
the richness of the detailed description of the content, it does not affect the overall
function of the metadata.
