Assignment 1
(Measurement errors and Standards)
1.

A component manufacturer constructs certain resistances to be anywhere

between 1.14K and 1.26 K and classifies them to be 1.2 K resistors
.What tolerance should be stated? If the resistances values are specified
at25oC and the resistors have a temperature coefficient of +500ppm/ oC,
calculate the maximum resistance that one of these component might
have at 75oC.
Ans: Absolute error= 0.06 K, Tolerance=5%, R=1.26K,, Maximum
resistance at 75 oC.
2.

Calculate the maximum percentage error in the sum of two current

measurements I1=100mA1% and I2=80mA5%

Ans: I=180mA2.8%
3.

Calculate the maximum percentage error in the difference of two

measured voltages when V1=100V1% and V1=80V5%

Ans: V=20V 25%

4.
An 820 resistance with accuracy of 10% carries a current of 10mA.The
current was measured by an analog ammeter on a 25mA range with an
accuracy of 25% of the full scale calculate the power dissipated in the
resistor , and determine the accuracy of the result.
Ans: P=82mW,error in R=25% ,error in I=5%
5.
The accuracy of a five digital voltmeters are checked by using each of
them to measure a standard 1.0000V from a calibration instrument .The
voltmeter readings are as follows : V1=1.001V, V2=1.002V, V3=0.999V,
V4=0.998V,and V5=1.000V.Calculate
average measured voltage
average deviation
Standard deviation
Probable error
Ans: Probable error=0.94mV
6.
The expected value of the voltage to be measured is 150 V .However the
measurement gives a value of 149V .Calculate
Absolute error

change in deflection of a pointer by 5mm.Determine its sensitivity and
deflection factor.
