OCLC Research Project Object

In the first stage search for content in the OCLC WorldCat, record metrics on the kinds of
bibliographic records we find there. This research is supported by the Research Division of
OCLC, which generously supplied the random sample of records from which we are working.
Make notes as we search on anything interesting we observe.
In the second stage our groups are going to analyze the clustered records in OCLC. we should
select the first 30 "works" from the first stage and search them again. This time we will look
specifically at the records in group displays. (Note, some works will have only one record; if that
happens just record its details.)
We should fill in a spreadsheet for our results. Column 1 gives the "work" identifier, columns 2
give the language of each record ("CatL: dut" on a group screen; we should record "dut"; in
individual records look for a three-letter lower-case code in field 040). In column 3 give the first
symbol in field 040. Again we may make notes.
Results in the form of an Excel spreadsheet, for each "work" give a brief citation (SurnameKeyword), date searched, 1 for present or 0 for not present, if present please give also the
number of records in the cluster. It was a different world then in the bibliographic universe.
