Carmen Westarp wrote a paper for her HLAC 1096 - Lifelong Wellness Application class. She learned that wellness encompasses physical, emotional, intellectual, spiritual, social and environmental health. Previously she had focused only on physical and nutritional health. She also learned about setting SMART goals and the importance of realistic goals. Going forward, she plans to focus more on her emotional, social and spiritual health. She wants to share what she learned with her daughter. Carmen intends to continue exercising regularly to prevent disease and slow aging. She will revise her behavior contract and set more realistic exercise goals.

Write a paragraph on each of the following: 1. What did you learn about lifelong wellness from taking this activity class? While I previously understood the importance of physical fitness and adequate nutrition from personal research, this class highlighted the components of wellness which go beyond physical and nutritional health. These components are physical, emotional, intellectual, spiritual, social and enviormental health. Before this class I had overlooked many of these components in relation to overall health but now have a clearer perspective on how they hold equal importance, balance amongst them is key. I also learned the importance of setting SMART goals and how being reasonable and realistic makes one more likely to achieve their goals.
2. How would you apply this information to your life?
I plan to remain conscious of where I am in regards to my emotional, social, and spiritual health as these are areas which I tend to neglect. I am also going to put forth more effort into focusing and determining what is and is not realistic for me. Lastly I want to share this information with my daughter now so that she grows in an enviorment that promotes and implements a balance in all components of wellness.
3. What is your intention to continue to exercise in your life and why?
As physical fitness is a detrimental key in prevention of disease and the slowing of senescence I plan to continue regular exercise at a minimum of 3 days a week. I also plan to revise my behavior contract and set more realistic goals that will be easier for me to attain.
4. General ideas for improving this course?
The only suggestions that I would have is to set up bi-weekly discussions so that students could serve as a support system among their classmates, sharing concerns, progress, complimets, suggestions and questions. This would be especially helpful in motivating students during the time in which they are required to log exercise.
