Diversity Statement
Kennesaw State University
ITEC 7500

In order to meet the needs of a diverse society, it is important that schools take the lead in
securing equity in availability of resources for diverse learners. Teachers, through the use of
technology, have a better opportunity to help these students be successful in the classroom than
ever before. Diversity can be seen in many ways. Todays classrooms are filled with students
that meet this definition. Diversity generally means any students that are from varying
backgrounds. Because our classrooms are filled with students from different ethnic, gender,
social economic, and special needs backgrounds, we must be prepared to have something to help
these students be successful.
In my classroom and in my department, I have used the following activities in order to
meet the diverse needs of our students.

Professional learning training teachers on how to use technology to meet the

needs of the diverse student body.

Equitable access to technology scheduling re-occurring days in computer labs

so that students may have equitable access to technology.

Ensuring minority students and students from low-income families are allowed
leadership roles with technology. This was accomplished through group work in
which leaders were pre-determined by the teacher.

Data collection creating sub groups within data collection to take a more
focused look at student results as it relates to diversity.

Reviewing software for bias or insensitivity this is ongoing. I am always

looking out for things that hamper student learning due to a bias slant that may be
considered insensitive to one or more groups.
