PART 1: SELF-REGULATION AT A PROFESSION LEVEL

Describe what a self-regulating healthcare profession means. What people, organizations, or things are
present in order to make massage therapy a self-regulating profession in Ontario? Describe their role in
self-regulation.

A self- regulating health care profession refers to being separate from the government,
whereas self-regulation is in conjunction with the government. The people involved
consist of the therapist and the patients. As a health care practitioner the main focus is the
publics well being and how the therapist conducts themselves in a professional manner
(para.1. 2007). In addition, maintaining boundaries is crucial for preserving the ethical
aspect of the profession. This ties into the Code of Ethics that the College of Massage
Therapists of Ontario delegates to each health care practitioner in relation to their
expectations in order to treat each patient most appropriately. The goal of the CMTO is to
oversee the health care practioners and intervene when necessary. For example, sending
peer assessors to each HCP to ensure they are keeping up with the CMTOs rules,
regulations and expectations. On the opposite end of the spectrum, the patient has a
responsibility to respect and abide by each boundary in addition to trusting in the
therapists competence and working together as a team.

PART 2: SELF-REGULATION AT A PERSONAL LEVEL

Describe what is meant by self-regulation at a personal level. How does self-regulation support
massage therapists as individuals? Use examples to illustrate how this might occur. How might selfregulation contribute to quality assurance? Again, use examples to illustrate your points.

Self-regulation refers to the individuals capabilities in light of their performance and

overall competence. It outlines the core components involved in the psychological ability
to self regulate and encompasses the self-efficacy mechanism that impacts thought,
affect, motivation and action (Bandura, 1991). This directly correlates with self-

assessment and quality assurance because it highlights the importance of an individuals

capacity to acknowledge the importance of progression in the workplace setting, as well
as setting and attaining new goals. In light of this, the therapist learns the value of being
self-regulated as well as identifying areas that need improvement. Individuals can also
seek external resources such as workshops, or continuing education credits.
