Subject: Request for ProposalBusiness Communication Project

Overview
Salt Lake Community College (SLCC) has large community of students that has all kinds busy
lives situation. SLCC has many resources available to help those students more convenient and
flexible in their lives.

Many resources available to those students:

That both work and attend school.
Must take night classes or on-line classes to fit with their work schedules.
Are often out of reach due to location, scheduling.
Are often to lack of communication from the college.

This research will not only help the students of this class by making them more aware of the
resources available to them but it will also help all future working students who may be missing
out.
Research Question
SLCC working students may not be aware of the resources available to the students. If this is the
case, what type of communication would help them best connect with the resources SLCC has to
offer?
Rationale
This project would allow a team to learn what it takes to reach a specific consumer population,
also the information that will be gathered during the primary and secondary research will be
what is create a specific communication.

SLCC may be doing a great job at reaching its more traditional students but in regards to
their working students they could do better.
SLCC would gain much needed insight into the needs of their working students that will
help them better serve this population.
What will dive the creation of a specific communication that will help SLCC reach its
working student population.

Feasibility
This project will be accomplished with the assistance of the Student Leadership. I have contacted
Curtis Larsen, Executive Vice President of the Student Senate, who offered any help that we may
need for this project. They would assist with gathering statistical information regarding the
numbers of working students that attend SLCC. This would also be the group that the final
project will be presented to.
Materials and Methods
This project would include primary research that would be conducted on campus and secondary
research would include SLCC own data about student populations.
We would need to find out if evening students are aware of the resources available.
We would need to find the communication that best reaches them.
Personnel
This project can be accomplished by a team of 4-6 students. At each step of the process the work
will be divided between the team members evenly. This will be most important during the
primary research which will yield better results the more questionnaires can be completed.
Utilize staff of SLCC Student Life and Leadership for information and detail about the
resources.
Answer resources questions and share feedback from students.
Answer any question that the students may have any concerns about resources.
Assist the resources with communication teaching program.
Telling friends, classmates, teachers and future students about the resources
program.
Share in written communications and visual presentations.

Hurdles
The largest hurdle of this project is that this class is mostly comprised of working students. The
fact that we are taking an evening class that meets only twice a week shows that we have busy
lives and taking additional time to conduct the research might be difficult. I feel that if we keep
this in mind when tasks are assigned that a way around this hurdle will be found.
