materials
L.A. 2.1.6b Identify elements of literary text (e.g., characters,
setting, plot)
Students will read the book Junie B. Jones and then they will use
the Popplet website to organize characters, plot, and setting of the
story.
Students will use Popplet on the computer to organize ideas.

Objective 1: Students will be able to understand and comprehend a

chapter book.
Objective 2: Students will be able to organize characters, find a
plot, and describe the setting of a chapter book.

Preparing the
Student

Assessment of
Student Learning

Objective 3: Students will be able to use Popplet in an educational

manner.
Reading in previous lessons for this class will help prepare them for
this next level of reading which will be this chapter book. There
should be proper teaching on what a character is and how to
identify them. Plot schemes should be taught prior to this class so
they understand the different parts they are searching for in the
story. The understanding of a setting should be known to these
students so they can easily pick out the environment these
characters are placed in.
Before students use Popplet, they should be fairly educated on how
to use a computer. There should be guidelines in the classroom on
computer usage, so that the students do not get distracted and also
so they have a good idea of what is going on in each step before the
Popplet website is assessed. Once that is known to be completed,
Popplet needs to be described to the students. The teacher should
prepare a presentation with Popplet and how the students should
organize their information because the grade level is so low. The
teacher should put into the Popplets descriptions on what goes into
each box so the students have an idea on what is asked of them.
Create: Students will design their own Popplet in their own
organized way including the details listed above.

Lesson Sequence

Measurement of
Success

Remember: Students will write out the different characters, the

setting and plot in an orderly way from listening to the story.
Understanding: Students will have to restate and recall all of the
parts of the story for this assignment.
Apply: Students have potential to add a drawing for the characters
or setting to make the story pop.
Analyze: Students will identify the different parts, people and
places of the story.
Evaluate: At the end students will describe how Popplet helped
them organize their assignment so they could better understand the
story.
1. Students will read together the book Junie B. Jones.
2. Teacher will help students with who the characters are, the
plot and the setting of the story by providing good hints.
3. Students will be allowed to discuss with their neighbor the
information they need for the Popplet.
4. The teacher will instruct the students on how to use Popplet.
5. Students will first write on a piece of paper the three main
categories that they need.
6. Students will check with the teacher to make sure they are
okay to go onto the popplet and start their assignment.
7. Before they go onto popplet, they will organize their work
into the mapping that Popplet provides in the same format.
8. Students will get on a computer/lap top, go onto Popplet and
make their own popplet of what they have just written.
9. Students will be free to add any creativity to their project
after they check with the teacher when they are done to
make sure they completed it correctly. Pictures can be added
and extra details with each category.
Teachers will measure the students success with this lesson/project
by evaluating each of the students Popplets and seeing how well
they used the website and how beneficial it was in incorporating the
organizing characters, plot, and setting in a book. Evaluating would
be measuring the success of the lesson and seeing how well
students did with this project. This could be applied to future
lessons if Popplet is successful in the classroom and did help with
the lesson. If it is successful in organizing thoughts and ideas, it can
be used for other lessons that require organization.
