CCSS Progressions: Measurement and Data (data part)
Categorical data- comes from sorting objects into categories; focuses on bar graphs to represent categorical
data
Measurement data- comes from taking measurements; line plot
Data are numbers with a context. Context provides meaning
Data gives way for many connections within math and other subjects.

Categorical Data

Kingergarden

classify objects into categories

count to answer "how many"
identify whether the number of objects in one group is greater than, less than, or equal to the number of objects in another group

Categorical Data

Grade 1

begin to organize and represent categorical data

not required to use a specific format to organize data
should be familiar with mark schemes and picture graphs
connections to addition and subtraction

Categorical Data

Grade 2

draw a picture graph and a bar graph to represent data set up with up to four categories
solve simple put-together, take-apart, and compare problems using information presented in a bar graph
represent whole numbers as lengths from 0 on a number line diagram with equally spaced points corresponding to the numbers 0, 1, 2,... and represent wholenumber sums and differences within 100 on a number line diagram

Categorical Data

Grade 3

Draw a scaled picture graph and a scaled bar graph to represent a data set with several categories. Solve one- and two-step how many more and how many
less problems using information presented in scaled bar graphs
connect to multiplication and division
gather categorical data in authentic contexts

Measurement Data

Grade 2

measure the length of an object by selecting and using appropriate tools such as rulers, yardsticks, meter sticks, and measuring tapes
build line plots
connects with representing whole numbers on number line diagrams and representing sums and differences on such diagrams

Measurement Data

Grade 3

beginning to learn fraction concepts

measure lengths using rulers marked with halves and fourths of an inch
pose questions about data presented in line plots

Measurement Data

Grade 4 and 5

students use fraction equivalence and arithmetic skills to solve problems that arise from analyzing line plots
work with data in science and other subjects
give deeper interpretations of data than in earlier grades

Measurement Data
histograms
bivariate data
scatter plots
line/time graphs
