THM 400 - General Reference Data

Trans Basic Operation:


The THM 400 is a RWD 3 speed unit.
Shift delay, line pressure control, and
shift feel, are all controlled by the vacuum modulator.
The upshift signal is supplied from an
output shaft driven governor.
The THM 400 uses an electrically operated solenoid, mounted on the valve
body to activate kickdown.
No TCC equipped version of the 400
was ever made.
The THM 400 was renamed the 3L80
for the new designation format.

Low/Reverse Servo & 1-2 Accumulator Assembly

Beginning in 1987, some models used


an additional (7th) checkball to cushion the reverse engagement.
The case passages and spacer plate
are different than previous models to
accommodate this 7th checkball.
