    Sound is a form of energy that is produced by vibration. Objects produce sound when they vibrate rapidly back and forth. Vibrations can be caused by vocal cords, instruments like a flute being played, or clapping hands. Sound travels through matter by causing the particles in solids, liquids, and gases to vibrate, transferring the vibrations from one area to the next. However, sound does not travel through empty space since there is no matter to vibrate. Plucking a guitar string causes the string to vibrate, and these vibrations are transferred to the air and other objects, allowing the sound to travel away from the guitar.
