Watershed Warriors Events: Quarter 2

Just as the Yellowstone River and its tributaries are threaded through the physical landscape of the Livingston area, they
are they are threaded throughout the economic and cultural aspects of the lives of its residents. Collaboration between
the community and the fifth-grade brings science to life through the art of fly-fishing and watershed education in
Watershed Warriors. Each student participates in one hour of environmental education each week through this
program. WW provides hand-on, place-based application to school subjects while bestowing stewardship of and access
to a common thread in our landscape and culture. The program meets over 66% of state science standards while
meeting numerous Common Core Math standards, Common Core English Language Arts standards, and Indian
Education for All Essential Understandings. Watershed Warriors was developed in Livingston and has received state
recognition. Surrounding area schools, including Bozeman, have begun to implement the program. The scheduled
activities for the first quarter are listed below!

ISAN (Invasive Species Action Network)
representative, Matt Wilhelm,
presents information about water
quality measurements via PowerPoint.
Students test a water sample from the
Yellowstone River for nitrates,
dissolved oxygen, and temperature.
Students view a documentary, Rising
from the Shadows, featuring local
residents. The documentary spotlights
cutthroat trout in the Yellowstone
Watershed.
A cutthroat biologist comes into to
describe her role in native species
protection.

Students apply the scientific method


to matching the hatch while fishing.
