7th & 8th Grade Melody Composition Activity

Objective: The purpose of this assignment is to guide you in creating and

performing your very own 8-16 bar melody.
Materials:
Pencil
Manuscript paper
Instruments
Directions:
Get in groups of 2-3
Using the guidelines below, write an 8-16 bar melody using the provided
manuscript paper
Rehearse your composition as a group
Perform your composition for the class
Guidelines for your melody:
Choose a key signature
o 7th grade options: Concert F, Bb, Eb, Ab
o 8th grade options: Concert C, F, Bb, Eb, Ab
Start and end on the first note of the key you are playing in.
(ex: in the key of concert Bb, starts and ends on Concert Bb)
Use a variety of pitches! Try to move by steps or skips.
Choose a time signature
o Options: 2/4 , 3/4 , 4/4
o Use a variety of rhythms
Use at least one dotted rhythm
Use at least one eighth rest
