September 1: State Bank of India (SBI) and Japan Bank for International Cooperation
(JBIC) signed a dual-currency loan agreement to set up an export credit line.
Note: The loan is co-financed with the Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ Ltd (BTMU)
amounting to 13.5 billion Japanese Yen ($135 million) and $21 million approximately.
September 1: Financial sector giant Nippon Life said it will partner Anil Ambani-led
Reliance Group for a proposed Reliance Bank and launched two India-focussed funds
for Japanese investors.
Note: The two funds will direct investments by Japanese retail investors into Indian
equity and bond markets.
September 2: RBI has issued amendments to Basel 3 norms. It has allowed banks to
issue additional Tier 1 capital instruments. The RBI said that banks must have a
provision of Point of Non-Viability (PONV) for every non-equity instrument.
September 2: United Bank of India declared debt-ridden Kingfisher Airlines and its
owner Vijay Mallya as wilful defaulters.
Note: What is a Wilful Default?
A wilful default occurs when either a borrower has not repaid when he can do so, or
when sanctioned funds have been used for other purposes or when the borrower
disposes off the assets assured for availing of the loan without the banks
knowledge.
September 3: Axis Bank which is India's third largest private bank has been
featured in Forbes Asia's FAB 50 list of 2014.
Note: This is the fourth time that Axis Bank has been featured and is amongst the
only two banks in this renowned list.
September 3: The RBI has issued directions to The Choundeshwari Sahakari Bank
Ltd. of Kolhapur, Maharashtra that will require the bank to seek prior approval for its
banking business.
September 9: The Reserve Bank of India will adopt a common recruitment system
from next year to tap talent for its core functions.
September 9: The Reserve Bank of India decided to fix the maximum age for
Managing Directors and Chief Executive Officers in private sector banks at 70.

September 19: The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) proposed to segregate the post of
Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of Public Sector Undertaking (PSU) banks.
Note: i. At present, the post of CMD in PSU banks is vested with one person only.
ii. The only exception among the PSU banks is State Bank of India where the top
position is commanded by the chairman and there are four managing directors with
clearly defined executive roles.
September 20: With the objective of addressing sanitation related health concerns,
the Urban Development Ministry and the Bill & Milinda Gates Foundation have
agreed on a partnership to promote user friendly toilets to ensure universal
sanitation in the country.
September 21: Coca-Cola India has launched its zero sugar soft drink Coca-Cola
Zero in line with its strategy to make India its fifth largest market by 2020.
September 23: Google India announced to launch a nationwide contest to develop a
mobile app for Prime Ministers office (PMO). The contest will be held in
collaboration with the citizen engagement platform of the government, MyGoV.
September 24: Private sector bank ICICI Bank launched a savings account for minors
above 10 years of age with the name Smart star.
September 26: Global rating agency Moody 2014 released a report titled Indian
Banks Could Need 26-37 billion US dollar in External Capital for Basel III Compliance.
September 26: RBI released Gopalakrishna Committee report on Capacity Building in
banks and non-banks. The committee has recommended a 360-degree feedback for
a transparent and comprehensive performance assessment exercise, one that
ensures adequate performance differentiation between employees.
September 26: State Bank of India (SBI) and Industrial Credit and Investment
Corporation of India (ICICI) allowed kids to operate bank accounts independently.
SBI had launched new accounts Pehla Kadam and Pehli Udaan for kids. Now, ICICI
Bank has launched Smart Stars account and Federal Bank Limited has Young Champ
Account for minors.
September 27: State Bank of India (SBI), the countrys largest lender announced that
it has signed a Line of Credit (LoC) of 500 million dollar with Export-Import Bank of
Korea (Korea Eximbank).
September 28: Seeking to expand Asian operations, Qatar-based Doha Bank will
acquire the Indian operations of the HSBC Bank Oman.
September 29: RBI announced fourth Bi-Monthly Monetary Policy Statement and
keept key rates unchanged.
September 29: The Reserve Bank of India, RBI, relaxed Know Your Customer, KYC
norms by allowing self-certification of documents for opening bank accounts. RBI
has reduced the liquidity provided under the export credit refinance (ECR) facility
from 32 per cent of eligible export credit outstanding to 15 per cent with effect from
October 10.

September 9: The Union Cabinet gave its approval for implementing a
comprehensive Telecom Development Plan for the North-Eastern Region. The
proposal entails an estimated cost of over Rs. 5,336 crore.
September 12: India successfully test-fired indigenously developed nuclear-capable
surface-to-surface Agni-I missile from Wheeler Island off Odisha coast. It has a
striking range of 700 to 1250 km.
September 12: The Supreme Court ruled 3 percent quota for disabled persons in all
government jobs.
September 14: India and Vietnam inked seven pacts, including one to enhance
cooperation in the strategic oil sector, as they called for freedom of navigation in the
South China Sea.

September 19: The government launched an electronic toll collection (ETC)

Note: The ministry has roped in ICICI bank and Axis bank for the purpose.

large solar power generation parks of about 1000 MW each. NTPC will invest Rs
7,000 cr in these parks.

be his last major international competition as he has decided to become a hobby

medal in the Asian Games by emerging champion in the mens freestyle 65kg
category at the Dowon Gymnasium in Incheon.

proposed by the then finance minister Mr. Pranab Mukherjee ( now president),

BACKGROUND
The Asian Games, also known as Asiad, is a Pancontinental multi-sport event held
every four years among athletes from all over Asia. The Games were regulated by
the Asian Games Federation (AGF) from the first Games in New Delhi, India, until
the 1978 Games. Since the 1982 Games they have been organized by the Olympic
Council of Asia (OCA), after the breakup of the Asian Games Federation. The Games
are recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and are described as
the second largest multi-sport event after the Olympic Games.
Incheon was awarded the right on April 17, 2007, defeating Delhi, India to host the
Games.

Games. It represents and highlights the significance of Asias wonderful diversity in

The theme of the 2014AsianGames is Meet Asias Future.
Mascot
The Official Mascot of the Asian Games 2014 is the Harbour Seal Siblings - Barame,
Chumuro and Vichuon means wind, dance and light in Korean language. They were
chosen above the famous landmark in South Korea because of they will act as the
peace messengers between South and North Korea.
DEFENDING CHAMPIONS
China set a new Asian Games record with 416 medals including 199 gold medals.
They have been defending table toppers for the eighth consecutive time with China
leading the final medal tally with South Korea (232) and Japan (216) were placed
third in the medal table.

The number of events in the Asian Games 2014 is 439 in 36 sports and disciplines.
They are Aquatics (Diving, Swimming, Synchronized swimming, Water polo), Archery,
Athletics, Badminton, Baseball (Baseball, Softball), Basketball, Bowling, Boxing,
Canoeing, Sprint, Slalom, Cricket, Cycling (BMX, Mountain bike, Road, Track),
Equestrian (Dressage, Eventing, Jumping), Fencing, Field hockey, Football, Golf,
Gymnastics (Artistic, Rhythmic, Trampoline), Handball, Judo, Kabaddi, Karate,
Modern pentathlon, Rowing, Rugby sevens, Sailing, Sepaktakraw, Shooting, Squash,
Table tennis, Taekwondo, Tennis (Tennis, Soft tennis), Triathlon, Volleyball (Beach
volleyball, Volleyball), Weightlifting, Wrestling, Wushu. In addition, eight nonOlympic sports will be featured: baseball, ten-pin bowling, cricket, kabaddi, karate,
sepak takraw, squash and wushu.
Medal Tally
China led the medal table for the ninth consecutive time. Cambodia won their first
Asian Games gold medal in taekwondo.37 NOCs won at least a one medal and 28
NOCs won at least one gold medal. 8 NOCs failed to win any medal at the Games.
India finished at 8th position in the 2014 Asian Games with 57 medals tally
comprising 11 gold, 10 silver and 36 bronze.
Kosuke Hagino of Japan (Swimmer) is announced as the most valuable player.
Hammer thrower Manju Bala's medal was upgraded from bronze to silver after a
Chinese competitor Zhang Wenxiu who finished ahead of her was caught for doping.
Zhang Wenxiu is the sixth athlete to be kicked out of the Asian Games in Incheon,
South Korea for doping and the second gold medal-winner after Malaysia's wushu
champion Tai Cheau Xuen.
