strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and
subtraction; relate the strategy to a written method and explain the reasoning used.
EQs:
How do we solve real world problems using whole numbers and decimals?
How can data be organized to keep track of a balance?
Objectives:
Students will be able to
-Accurately add and subtract whole numbers with decimals to the hundredths
-Use precise language when discussing and justifying their thinking with their peers
-Self-select efficient strategies for solving problems involving addition/subtraction of decimals and
money

What formative evidence will you use to document student learning during this lesson?
-Systematic Observation
-Student reflection
-Self-assessment
What summative evidence will you collect, either during this lesson or in upcoming lessons?
- Business Plan packet
-Chapter test the following week
Cognitive interview-I will ask students two questions.
1.Macy went to Barnes and Noble. She bought a book for $5.99, a magazine for $3.25, and a cup of
hot chocolate for $1.75. She handed the cashier a $10 bill. How much did she spend and how much
did she get back?
I will have students solve the real-world problem by first answering by telling me their thought
process, then continue to solve using a pencil. I will have materials ready for them, including,
paper, pencil, base ten blocks, and graph paper. Based on the responses, I will change my lesson as

needed. If students are struggling I will model more of the business plan packet and make more of
my lesson whole groups rather the partner collaborations. Also, I will be pulling back small groups
to work individually with students to meet their individual needs.
What Content Knowledge is
necessary for a teacher to teach
this material?
Content knowledge of how to create a budget plan, solving real world, multi step problems, and
knowledge of adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing decimals.
Students may have misconceptions about this content about how to use a budget plan and working with
money.
Lesson Implementation
Teaching methods for this lesson includes the catch and release model:
Step-by-Step Plan
(What exactly do you plan to do in
teaching this lesson? Be thorough.
Act as if you needed a substitute to
carry out the lesson for you.)
Where applicable, be sure to
address the following:
What Higher Order Thinking
(H.O.T.) questions will you
ask?
How will materials be
distributed?
Who will work together in
groups and how will you
determine the grouping?
How will students transition
between activities?
What will you as the teacher
do?
What will the students do?
What student data will be

Catch 1: Engage
Release 1: Turn and Talk
Catch 2: Whole Group Discussion
Release 2: Blueprint partner work
Catch 3: Model Business Plan and review rubric
Release 3: Create independent plan with partner collaboration
Catch 4: Model Build/Test instructions
Release 4: Build/Test (partner collaboration)
Catch 5: Engage in a gallery walk
Release 5: Students will reflect on classmates suggestions and make necessary adjustments.
Release 6: Evaluation- Students will self-assess by answering the essential question in their math
journals and by grading themselves independently by using the rubric.

If a student struggles with the content I will pull the pair aside and catch them were they need the most
support. I will remodel an example problem. I will also have students who really mastered the content
help them out.
a student masters the content quickly?
For students who master the content quickly during this lesson I will have them reteach others who
need support. Also, they made design a limeade stand, using student created decimal numbers.

If applicable, how does this lesson connect to the interests and cultural backgrounds of your
students?
This lesson connects to the interests of my students because they will be attending JA BizTown in a
few weeks.
If applicable, how does this lesson connect to/reflect the local community?
This lesson is connected to the local community because it connects them to the business world which
they can start their own safe, business ideas with their caretakers.
How will you differentiate instruction for students who need additional challenge during this
lesson (enrichment)?
For students who need additional challenge during this lesson I will have them reteach others who need
support. Also, they made build a limeade stand.
How will you differentiate instruction for students who need additional language support?
For my ELL, I will have him paired with a specific partner who speaks his native language. Also, he
