Lesson Content

What Standards (national or

state) relate to this lesson?
(You should include ALL
applicable standards. Rarely do
teachers use just one: theyd never
get through them all.)
Essential Understanding
(What is the big idea or essential
question that you want students to
come away with? In other words,
what, aside from the standard and
our objective, will students
understand when they finish this
lesson?)
Objectives- What are you
teaching?
(Student-centered: What will
students know and be able to do
after this lesson? Include the
ABCDs of objectives: action,
behavior, condition, and degree of
mastery, i.e., "C: Given a sentence
written in the past or present tense,
A: the student B: will be able to rewrite the sentence in future tense
D: with no errors in tense or tense
contradiction (i.e., I will see her
yesterday.)."
Note: Degree of mastery does not
need to be a percentage.)

MAFS.5.NBT.2.7:
Add, subtract, multiply, and divide decimals to hundredths, using concrete models or drawings and
strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and
subtraction; relate the strategy to a written method and explain the reasoning used.

EQs:
How do we solve real world problems using whole numbers and decimals?
How can data be organized to keep track of a balance?

Objectives:
Students will be able to
-Accurately add and subtract whole numbers with decimals to the hundredths
-Use precise language when discussing and justifying their thinking with their peers
-Self-select efficient strategies for solving problems involving addition/subtraction of decimals and
money

Rationale
Address the following questions:
Why are you teaching this
objective?
Where does this lesson fit
within a larger plan?
Why are you teaching it this
way?
Why is it important for
students to learn this concept?

Group Size: 12

Name: ___Miss Hester ___

Date of Lesson: 11/7, 11/10

Why are you teaching this objective?

- I am teaching this objective so my students are prepared for the real world by learning how to
make budgets and working with money (decimals).
Where does this lesson fit within a larger plan?
- This lesson fits with the larger plan because my students will be prepared when they attend their
field trip to JA Biztown where they will be expected to engage in real-world problem solving.
Why are you teaching it this way?
-I am teaching it this way because the steM lesson plan is very engaging and replaces the average
textbook, math lesson.
Why is it important for students to learn this concept?
-It is important for students to learn how to add and subtract using decimals so they understand
and plan on how to use their money wisely in the future.

Evaluation Plan- How will you

know students have mastered
your objectives?
Address the following:
What formative evidence will
you use to document student
learning during this lesson?
What summative evidence will
you collect, either during this
lesson or in upcoming lessons?

What formative evidence will you use to document student learning during this lesson?
-Systematic Observation
-Student reflection
-Self-assessment
What summative evidence will you collect, either during this lesson or in upcoming lessons?
- Business Plan packet
-Chapter test the following week
Cognitive interview-I will ask students two questions.
1.Macy went to Barnes and Noble. She bought a book for $5.99, a magazine for $3.25, and a cup of
hot chocolate for $1.75. She handed the cashier a $10 bill. How much did she spend and how much
did she get back?
I will have students solve the real-world problem by first answering by telling me their thought
process, then continue to solve using a pencil. I will have materials ready for them, including,
paper, pencil, base ten blocks, and graph paper. Based on the responses, I will change my lesson as

needed. If students are struggling I will model more of the business plan packet and make more of
my lesson whole groups rather the partner collaborations. Also, I will be pulling back small groups
to work individually with students to meet their individual needs.
What Content Knowledge is
necessary for a teacher to teach
this material?

Content knowledge of how to create a budget plan, solving real world, multi step problems, and
knowledge of adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing decimals.

What background knowledge is

necessary for a student to
successfully meet these
objectives?

How will you ensure students have this previous knowledge?

-I will you ensure students have this previous knowledge because all lessons taught a week prior
to this lesson will include students solving multi step math problems involving computing
decimals.

How will you ensure students

have this previous knowledge?
Who are your learners?
What do you know about
them?
What do you know about their
readiness for this content?

Who are your learners?

-My class consists of 12 5th grade students in an urban, Title 1 school.
What do you know about them?
-I know my students are ages 10-12 and include five girls and six boys, with one boy is Hispanic
and the rest of the class is African American. I have one ELL, two easily distracted students, and a
chatty classroom.
What do you know about their readiness for this content?
-I know my students know how to estimate while adding and subtracting decimals, adding and
subtracting decimals using base ten blocks, and how to add and subtract decimals to the
thousandths place.

What misconceptions might

students have about this
content?
Teaching Methods

What Higher Order Thinking
(H.O.T.) questions will you
ask?
How will materials be
distributed?
Who will work together in
groups and how will you
determine the grouping?
How will students transition
between activities?

students to see who I need to catch and reteach
a student struggles with the content?

What will you do if

If a student struggles with the content I will pull the pair aside and catch them were they need the most
support. I will remodel an example problem. I will also have students who really mastered the content
help them out.
a student masters the content quickly?
For students who master the content quickly during this lesson I will have them reteach others who
need support. Also, they made design a limeade stand, using student created decimal numbers.
