What to Do if You Have an ELL


Student in the Classroom

Be very patient: Though they


may not be able to speak your
language, they can sense when
you are getting frustrated with
them. There effective filters
(stress and anxiety level) will turn
on. We dont want that!

Stages of Language

Use PLENTY of visuals :


Visuals, symbols, graphics
organizers, all of these are
useful tools for ELL students.
These all make the process of
communication less stressful
for both the educator and
students.
Label items in the classroom:
this will make the childs time in
the classroom a lot less stressful
Learn some word in the childs
native language: This creates a
positive relationship for the
teacher and the student. If theyre
learning your language why not
learn some of theirs?!

Pre-Production: the student has


minimal comprehension, does not
verbalize, nods yes and no

Early Production: the student has


limited comprehension, produces
one or two word responses,
participates using key words and
familiar phrases, uses present-tense
verbs

Speech Emergence: the student has


good comprehension, can produce
simple sentence, makes grammar
and pronunciation errors,
frequently misunderstands jokes

Intermediate Fluency: the


student has excellent
comprehension and makes
few grammatical errors

Advanced Fluency: The


student has a near- native
level of speech.
