Understand that the three digits of a three-digit number represent amounts of hundreds, tens,
and ones: e.g., 706 equals 7 hundreds, 0 tens, and 6 ones. 100 can be thought of as a bundle of ten
tens - called a "hundred."

This is a worksheet I created as a quick warm up assessment for math. I used the Smartboard to
create three dice which represented the ones, tens, and hundreds place. Students were called
upon to come up to the board and roll the dice on the screen to create a three digit number. The
timer would begin and students had one minute to write it, draw it, and expand it. The outcome of
this assessment allowed me to identify the particular area students were excelling or in need of
further scaffolding. This particular assessment provided me with feedback which indicated a need
for small group instruction with expanded form. To support my struggling readers, I always place
the document on the ELMO or SMARTboard and it read aloud. I also have students highlight key
information as a reminder during individual assessments.
