Yarn Numbering / yarn count

Indirect Yarn count:

In the Indirect count system
The requirement of number of hank (1 hank= 840 yds.) to fill 1 pound in weight is the count of that
particular yarn.
Here weight of yarn is fixed & length of yarn is according to its fineness / coarseness.
Fixed Weight = 1 lb.
Length = variable (Number of hanks)

=
,

If we want to measure yarn count of cotton yarn we can proceed by three alternative methods as
following:
1. Formula

N= yarn count

Example: On a cone there are 8000 yds. Yarn, which weight is

0.925 lb., finds out the count of the yarn.
Solution:

W= weight of the yarn (Sample)

=
L= Length of the yarn (sample)

(1 lb. X 8000yds. / 0.925 lb. X 840 yds.)

= 10.29 = 11 count
W= Unit weight = 1 lb.
.W= weight of the yarn (Sample) = 0.925 lb.
L= Unit length = 840 yds.
L= Length of the yarn (sample)= 8000 yds.
W= Unit weight = 1 lb.
L= Unit length = 840 yds.
