Cooperative Learning Structure: What am I?
Age/Level/Content/Goals:

6th Grade (11-12 year olds)


ESOL Classroom
Vocabulary
Goal: know vocab words and definitions; correctly use vocab words in original sentences.

Materials: Laminated cards with ribbon, hand out with vocabulary words and definitions
Description:
Teams will review the structure What am I? in 30 seconds with their groups. Then, students
will line up in alphabetical order according to their first names. Students will number off. Even
number students will retrieve and place cards on odd number students. Odd number students will
then do the same for even number students. Students will be given two and a half (2 1/2) minutes
to complete the structure. Pairs will then share their original sentence.
Self-Check:
P Students review the structure together and work together to find vocab and definition pairs.
I Each student is responsible for knowing and following the rules of the structure and
demonstrating a working knowledge of vocab by being able to answer questions about vocab
words and definitions.
E Each student provides a step when reviewing the structure.
S Students are all working at the same time to figure out what they are and find their pair.
Multiple Intelligences:
Bodily/Kinesthetic movement around room; Interpersonal communicating with other
students; Verbal/Linguistic asking questions and giving answers; Logical/Mathematical use
process of elimination to figure out What am I?; Visual/Spatial see others cards;
Connections to other knowledge areas:
Through definitions, there are connections to geology/nature, politics, and health.
Thinking Skills:
Logical reasoning, process of elimination, vocabulary skills
