Learning Activity #1

I will ensure that worksheets are printed and on students desks.

Introduction
I will call the students to the carpet by saying I am going to start the lesson
with a read-aloud, so I need to see quiet students who are ready to be
called to the carpet!
When students are seated at the carpet, I will ask what is a symbol? Can
you tell me some Canadian symbols? Why are they Canadian symbols? to
see if students are already on the track to identifying Canadian symbols
and/or their significance.
1. Students will raise their hands if they have a question
2. Students will cut and glue their symbols into the appropriate
category, and only colour when they are done both the first and
second worksheet
1. Read Aloud
2. Picture Webs (Cutting and gluing)
3. Picture Webs (Drawing and labelling)
I will say now we are going to read about many Canadian symbols in this
book!

questions
Before opening the book, I will say this says M is for Maple, what
Canadian symbol could it be talking about? and reveal that the
book is talking about the Maple Leaf, and will ask what is the
maple leaf on? and what else could we mean is a symbol of
Canada when we say maple? How about maple syrup?
- I will stop at the wheat page and say do you think this is a symbol
of the praries, which is a grassy and farmlike part of Canada, or like
an Acadian symbol, which is a rocky part of Canada? and continue
to say So, wheat is a symbol of the praries of Canada
- At the end of the book, I will ask students to recall some symbols of
Canada from the book,, and ask them which one is a symbol of the
Canadian praries
Organizing
- I will dismiss students, one row at a time, to return to their desks
for their instructions to complete their worksheets
I will be assessing student knowledge of symbols when they answer my
questions. If their answers are not what I am looking for, I will guide them
with more questions to encourage critical thinking.
Picture Webs Cutting and Gluing
- I will tell students that they are going to cut and glue the pictures
of the Canadian symbols on the picture web under the proper
titles, so I will ask them to have their scissors and glue ready
- I will tell students that they may only colour when they are done
the worksheet
- Students will have the remainder of the period to work on this
worksheet and the next
I will be walking around the room and asking students so why do you
think this is a symbol of Canada? as they work on their worksheets to
assess student knowledge.
Picture Webs Drawing and Labelling
- I will tell students that they are going to draw and label Canadian
symbols, but they have to be different ones than the symbols on
their first worksheet
- Students will have the remainder of the period to work on this
worksheet and their cutting and gluing worksheet
I will be prompting students who do not know other symbols by asking
them questions about the book I read.
Closure
I will say now we know some things that represent Canada so we can
learn all about our country!
Feedback from students will be received on an individual basis as I walk
around the room and ask them what they are learning.
I will say you guys worked really hard to get to know Canada today, thank
you!
I will ask students to clean up and put their things away to prepare to go
home.

Activity/Activities

Students who have completed their worksheets may draw a Canadian symbol and write
as many facts about it as they can.

Reflections from the

lesson

Since teaching this class was new to me, I should have strictly outlined my expectations
for behavior. Although the majority of students completed the assignment, some took
longer to get on track than others because of socializing. I also had students come up to
me when they should have been seated. Next time I teach a new class, I will tell them how
I expect them to behave when they are doing an activity. Otherwise, I believe it was a
great lesson. When I asked students about examples of symbols as they did their work,

they were able to come up with plenty. They were also able to tell me why they are
symbols.
