Introduction to Thermometers
- I will put my slide on the second page, with the interactive
thermometer
- I will ask students what do we notice about where zero is on a

thermometer?
- I will ask students so why is it in the middle? What is below it?
- I will tell students so when the red on a thermometer is low, that
means its cold!

Lesson

I will tell students so when the red on a thermometer is high, that

means its hot!
I will move the red on the Smart board thermometer upward and
ask students so is this hot or cold?
I will ask students so could this be hot chocolate or an ice cream
cone?

Directions
- I will ask two students to flip to the first page of their booklets and
say so I want you to colour the thermometer, guess if the red line
will be high or low? With an ice cube, would it be low because its
cold?
- I will tell students they have a few minutes for this activity
Assessment will be done as I am listening to student answers and checking
for understanding of my directions. I will also be assessing student
behavior.
Workbooks Page 1
- Students will complete the first page of their booklets
Instruction
- I will say Give me 5! Okay since most of you are done,we are going
to measure exact temperatures.
- With my interactive thermometer up, I will move the red to 50 and
ask so what is the temperature?
- I will move the red to -20 and ask so what is the temperature? Its
below zero but it still says 20, so it is minus 20
- I will tell students I want you to do the rest of the booklet, you will
tell me what temperature the thermometer says and if it is hot,
cold, or warm
- I will say on the last page, I want you to colour in the thermometer
to any level you want and then tell me the temperature
I will be assessing by walking around the room and assisting students who
need it. I will also be assessing student behavior by making sure students
who know what to do can help each other.
Completing Workbooks
- Students will work on their thermometer booklets until the end of
the period
I will be assessing by walking around the room and looking at student
progress, and also by collecting their booklets at the end of the lesson.
Closure
I will say so now that we can read thermometers, we will know exactly
how hot or cold things are!
I will ask students for a thumbs up if they think they are ready to work
with real thermometers, and a thumbs down if they need help.
Feedback will be written on students booklets.
I will ask students to give me their booklets and line up at the door to go
back to their classrooms and go to recess. Students will be called by rows,
depending on which rows are quiet.
