Paula by Isabel Allende;

her novel,
her inspiration,
her daughter.
Paula is a novel of memories that leaves the soul bare, such a thriller
novel that you read without breathing. These touching lines written is
a tragic and personal experience.
By Nicol Irarrzabal, Claudia Snchez.

A novel that starts as a letter to her daughter,

who in December, 1991, lapsed into a coma and
was hospitalized during several months at the
hospital in Madrid. Isabel started to write about
her family, experiences, unusual anecdotes,
romances and her childhood. Using the writing art
as a way to relieve this tragedy, Isabell was a
desperate mother at the beginning and resigned at
the end. Over the novel, through the COUEP and
the family travels, little by little Isabell starts to
accept that her daughter is not in her body
anymore.
Isabel Allende Llona has become one of the most
prominent writers over the last decades.
The novel shows the willpower that this author
has to stablish contact with her 28 - year - old
daughter, who was sick with porphyria. The story
takes place from the day that Paula entered the
hospital. Isabel stayed by her side all the time
during the hospitalization, staying at nights on a
motel where she started to write the novel;
nevertheless, Paulas destiny was getting worse
every day, her stay on the hospital became useless,
so Paula was moved to the Allendes house in San
Francisco, where she could be surrounded by
friends and family.

Paula is a book which produces several feelings and

reflections to the readers about life gratitude.
Also, Isabell shows through her book how had been
her life until that time, making clear how much she
loved her daughter and the level of frustration that
that
situation
produced
on
her.
It is completely necessary to highlight the simplicity
of all the letter written by Isabel without any
recipient. Besides, it seems that all the letters were
written for the readers, because they could transmit
all the pain, frustration and in some occasions, the
happiness that Isabel felt in certain times.
Paula is the most touching, personal and intimate
book written by Isabel Allende. Next to Paulas
bedside when she was dying, the Chilean author was
able to write a story about herself and her family, in
order to give it to Paula when she would recover
from that dramatic trance. The result became to a
self-portrait, with an unusual emotion and recreation
of women sensitivity of our current period.
