To check: Tune in the generator frequency, then increase the generator output and tune in the image frequency. The image frequency should be weaker than the fundamental and aud- ible 910 kilocycles lower on the receiver dial. When the fit between the plunger and solenoid 18 too tight, the eir cantt get out fast enough. The result is @ slow or sluggish operating tuner. A11 late production tuners have an adjustable air re- ease in the solenold end plate. Early pro- duetion tuners that do not have this adjust~ able air release and operate sluggishly. due to dash-pot action, should have the soleno!é end plate replaced with an end plate having the adjustable air retease. order part number 1x76556- ‘The tuner olenoid coti must be in @ horizontal or near horigontal position or the tuner will not operate properly. If it is operated with the cofl in vertical position, the solenoid and carriage return spring may not be strong enough to operate tuner. THEORY OF OPERATION york: Throughout this paragraph, tt fe suggested that constant refe ence be made to Figure 1- Wnen any push-button 1s pressed, current fone through the solenoid coil, causing tne plunger to pull into the soil. Near the en¢ of the plunger travel, through a ratchet me- chanism inside the plunger, the selector switch shaft 1s rotated 60°, moving the selector ewitch and stop plate to their new position. An instant later, the solenoid switch ts opened breaking solenoid current and the carriage return spring then pulls the plunger out, closing the solenoid switch again. If the selector ewitch 1s now resting at the po- sition selected by the push-button (cut anay section of selector switch resting in front of contact selected by push-button), the solenoid plunger will continue to be pulled out until the stop plate 1 resting on the selected lead screw stop. In the event the selector switch MANUAL tomes) wgsee! OF 1948 MOST-OFTEN-NEEDED RADIO DIAGRAMS mer one snowy —= 6 VOLTS. FIGURE 1. setae TUNER FUNCTIONAL DETAIL + REE fs not resting in the position selected by the push button when the solenoid plunger ts on ite return trip, the moment the plunger moves: out far enough to actuate the solenoid switch, current will again flow through solenoid caus~ Ing the plunger to be pulled in again. The plungers inward motion again rotates the stop plate and selector switch through another 60°- ‘This last operation ts repeated automatically until the selector ewtich cones to rest at the position selected by the push-button, at which tine the soYenoid circuit ts opened and tne plunger moves out until the stop plate 1s resting on the selected lead screw stop. ‘The stops are adjusted to the desired positions during the station setting up procedure, through the set-up gear train assembly. Refer to Figure g for mechanics behing station setting-up mechanism detail. wen tne button on which a station is to be set up is first pressed, the tuner operates and the stop plate comes to rest against the selected lead screw atop. The pressure of the stop plate against the lead screw stop moves the lead screw forward until ts shoulder rests against the tuner and plate. The square end of the lead screw does not engage in the square hole of the set-up gear until the set~ up Dutton 1s pushed in or the station set-up knob ts wrned (whichever 1s applicable). A latch on one end of the detent lever engages the gear lever, Rolding the set-up gear train tm contact with the selected lead screw. Now the selected lead screw stop can be moved on its lead screw by turning the manual tuning shaft. None of the other lead screws turn be~ cause the stop plate fs not resting against then, After the button is set up, pressing any other button will unlatch tne gear lever and disengage the lead screw from the set-up See Figure 2. gear. ieka"Senew soLeworo strvon (OREAKS CURRENT r Fete Sete nsibe SOLEMN scryaron 24 sw sexceroR swiren ano Since the coil tuning iron cores are attached to the carriage plate and move in unison with the plunger, the point at which they are brought to a stop (by neans of the lead screw stop) determines the frequency to wnich the cotls are tuned. Dash=pot action between te plunger and tne solenoid determines the tuner operating speed. ‘The rate at which air is allowed to enter or escape through the adjustable air re~ lease determines the speed of the plunger. Bee Figure 1.
