Daily Lesson Plan Form

Teacher: Carly Collins

Subject: Algebra 1

Grade Level: 9th

Mentor: Joni Hutcherson

Campus/District: NMHS

Date: September 10, 2014

Overall Goal of Lesson: We will use the properties of numbers to simplify algebraic expressions
Instructional Objectives: I will create a simplifying expressions problem for my neighbor to solve.
Texas Essential Knowledge & Skills (TEKS) &
ELPS:
A.4A Find specific function values, simplify polynomial
expressions, and factor as necessary in problem situations
(Readiness)
A.4B Use the commutative, associative, and distributive
properties to simplify algebraic expressions (Supporting)
(C) use strategic learning techniques such as concept mapping,
drawing, memorizing, comparing, contrasting, and reviewing
to acquire basic and grade-level vocabulary
3(E) share information in cooperative learning interactions

Key Vocabulary: Term, Like terms, Coefficient,

Equivalent, Distributive property, Area,
Perimeter.

Higher Order Questions:

Why can we cancel out zero pairs when using Algebra Tiles?
How do Algebra Tiles connect to what we learned last class?
Why are simplifying and combining like terms important in the real world?
Student Activities:
Students will learn how to manipulate Algebra Tiles in order to simplify algebraic expressions. They will
also incorporate technology to check their answer after working through problems with a partner on their
desks.
Modifications/ELL Strategies:
Using Algebra Tiles
Working in groups
Time Allotted

Anticipatory Activity for Lesson:

Download QR code for activity (optional)

Teacher Input/Lesson Activity:

Discuss and demonstrate how to use Algebra Tiles to simplify algebraic expressions.

30 minutes
Modeling:
Demonstrating how to simplify expression by combining like terms using Algebra Tiles.
20 minutes

Guided Practice:
Give each pair of students a work sheet with a QR code to work with partners to discuss
simplifying expressions.
Independent Practice:
QR code activity allowing students to work on their desks and check their answers by
scanning the QR code

5 minutes

Lesson Closure:
Ask students which method they like better (double rainbow or Algebra Tiles) and have
them answer on index cards that I will collect before they leave.
Assessment Methods/Strategies:
While students are doing activity on desks, walk around and determine which problem the
students are having the most difficulty with and then go over that problem together as a
class.

Resources (supplies, equipment, software, etc.):

Smart device (QR code), desks, dry erase markers, colored pencils, calculator, interactive notebook, group work sheets in
page protector
