EXPLORE Bioscience Innovation & Entrepreneurship!

OVERVIEW!
BioSTL, Diversity Awareness Partnership (DAP), Sigma-Aldrich, and The Venture Caf are partnering to
launch a new externship program aimed at exposing, empowering, and encouraging students of color to
pursue STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) and other careers in St. Louis growing
bioscience and entrepreneurial ecosystem.!

Selected students will gain insight from industry leaders to encourage their success in college; connect
with professional mentors; participate in experiential learning in a lab environment and in the innovation
community; and be exposed to potential internship and employment opportunities. !

BENEFITS!

Students will learn about the biosciences field and requirements for future internships/employment!
Students will learn about innovation in a corporate setting and in the entrepreneurial ecosystem!
Students can add: Externship at BioSTL, Sigma-Aldrich, and The Venture Caf to college resumes!
Students have direct opportunities to network and seek an internship or shadowing experience with
these organizations!
Students will understand why diversity in the field of biosciences is so important!

PROGRAM!
Free, 3-day externship for high school students in their sophomore, junior and senior years!
8:30 am to 12:30 pm, lunch included!
School and/or student responsible for transportation !

January 22: at Sigma-Aldrich!

Hear from professionals in research and other roles about career paths at the bioscience corporation!
Hands-on lab experience to learn how to design and run an experiment in a corporate lab!

February 24: at The Venture Caf !

Hear from entrepreneurs who have translated their education and experiences into new startup
opportunities!
Learn about design thinking and other models of innovation!
Hands-on, group innovation experience aimed at developing and selling an innovative solution to a
defined problem!

March 10: at Sigma-Aldrich!

Experiential case challenge to apply innovation process to real world, corporate problem!
