Text
A First Course in Real Analysis second edition by Murray H. Protter and Charles B. Morrey, Jr.
Our book is intended to serve as a text for mathematical analysis. The course itself is
usually taken by advanced undergraduate or first year graduate students majoring in mathematics,
engineering, and natural sciences. While perhaps you have encountered some of topics we’ll
study in this course, the rigor and the depth of our approach will certainly be new.
Topics Covered
We will cover samples of the last eight chapters of the book, concentrating on topics such
as infinite sequences and series, Fourier series, improper integrals, the inverse function theorem,
the change of variables in multiple integrals, and the theorems of Green and Stokes.
Class Requirements
There will have assigned home work problems, which you should be turned in within a
week. In addition, there will be a midterm and a final examination. Your grade will be
determined on the basis of your home work (30%) and on the basis of your performance in these
examinations (each 35%).
Also, we expect you to attend the lectures regularly, participate in class discussions, be on
time with the assignments, and take the examinations at the designated time.
If you have any questions come and see me.
