Experience B-1

Objective: To observe and make note of the whole classrooms learning environment and
its value to students and teacher.
Directions: Observe the classroom environment and respond to the questions that follow. Use
class resources (text, web, articles) to provide support for responses.
1.

What kind of learning environment has the teacher created for learners?

Ms. Little has created an environment that allows the children to learn and collaborate with each
other. She has a ELA/Literacy reading area. She also has a science area with books and a
listening are that is also inviting.

2.

What are the most important qualities of this environment?

I think the reading area with the books set up by genre really helps the children to access books
they truly like.

3.

What things appear to be important symbols and sites in this environment, i.e., rocking
chair used for an authors chair, round tables to conduct literature circles, student writing
displayed on the walls, classroom library filled with books available for student checkout? In short, what is most valued in this classroom?

She has a kidney shaped table to guided reading groups. The students sit at tables of four to
collaborate when in group work.
4.

What does the teacher most value? How do you know?

She really values anchor charts. They are everywhere for the children to learn their materials.

5.

What do students most value? How do you know?

They value what they are working on because the teacher allows them to reference the anchor
charts.
6.

What do teachers and students not value? How do you know?

The science area has no vocabulary or posters to display what they are learning.

7.

How has this observation pushed your thinking about the kind of learning environment
you wish to create? Where did you find these links to our course literature?
I teach math and science and I am going to make more anchor charts starting next week.
