OUTCOMES FROM ALBERTA PROGRAM OF STUDIES

General
Learning
Outcomes:
Specific
Learning
Outcomes:

2-9: Students will recognize the effects of heating and cooling, and identify methods for heating and
cooling.
Students will:
1. Describe temperature in relative terms, using expression such as hotter than and colder
than.
2. Measure temperature in degrees Celsius.
5. Recognize that the human body temperature is relatively constant and that a change in body
temperature often signals a change in health.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Students will:
1. Understand that we measure temperature in Degrees Celsius.
2. Understand learn the parts of a thermometer- The Bulb, The Stem, The alcohol, and the scale.
3. Understand that the Alcohol rises when its warmed, and lowers when its cold.
4. Understand the significant temperature on the scale of the thermometer- Freezing, Boiling, Normal Body Temp,
Fever Temp, Cold Day, Hot day. Nice Day.

ASSESSMENTS
Observations:

Key Questions:

Products/Performances:

Observe students ability to participate and follow along. Can they accurately name the
parts of a thermometer and do they understand there are significant temperatures.

What is temperature?
Does anyone know what kind of tool we use to measure temperature?
Where at home have you seen this tool?
Do you read the temperature every day?
Do you think this room has a temperature?
Did you know that there are important, or significant temperatures we all need to
know? Can anyone think of why we need to know certain temperatures? What do
they tell us?
Do you think you have a temperature? Have you ever gotten colder or hotter? Did
you notice a change in your body when this happened?
Interactive smart board activity.
Worksheets to work through while doing the lesson.

PROCEDURE
Prior to lesson

Attention Grabber &

Assessment of prior
knowledge.

Have smart board activity loaded and ready.

Have hand-outs ready.
Have thermometers counted and ready.
Introduction
Kids are sitting in their desks.
Ask the questions:
Has anyone ever been sick?
Has anyone ever had their moms or dads take their temperature when

theyre sick?
Does anyone know the tool they use when they take their
temperature?
What are they looking for when they take you temperature?
Did you know that for humans, people like you and me, we have an
average body temperature, and when it rises on a few degrees our
bodies start to feel sick, and we typically get a fever.
Today we are going to learn about the parts of thermometers and the
significant temperatures we need to know as grade twos!
Students will remain in their desks unless asked to come demonstrate with
the smart board.
Students will be able to point to the parts of the thermometer, and to
understand that there are average temperatures and that we will begin to
learn them.
-Thermometer parts.
-Significant temperatures.
-Students will remain in their desks, and we will move right into the smart
board activity.

KQs
What is temperature?
Does anyone know what kind of tool we use to measure
temperature?
Where at home have you seen this tool?
Do you read the temperature every day?
Have information slide of what the parts of the thermometer are.
-Invite students to guess with a fill in the blank/hangman/word scramble
style of game. Use popsicle sticks for guessing the letters, students will also
have a hand out with the scrambled words to write on work through the
questions on their own
-Once the information slide is complete, hand out thermometers for more
tactile approach to learning.
-Walk through the parts as a class together.
-The stem is the body of the thermometer and is very fragile.
-The blub is where the alcohol sits.
-The alcohol is the red liquid that rises or falls if it is warmed or cooled.
-The scale is the number system that tells us the temperature. It ranges in
intervals, which is important to determine. Temperature in Canada is
measured by Degrees Celsius.

Learning Activity #2

15 min.

Have the students work in a lock step method.

Having the visual, and the handout covers some differentiation in the class.
Observing students ability to follow along, keeping all students on the same
page, inviting all students to guess and stay engaged.
Interactive Smart Board Matching Significant temperatures to images.
Do you think this room has a temperature?
Did you know that there are important, or significant temperatures
we all need to know? Can anyone think of why we need to know
certain temperatures? What do they tell us?

15 min.

Explain that there are certain temperatures we need to know as grade

twos because they are very important in letting us know what can and will
happen either outside, in our houses, with our food, and in our bodies.
Using popsicle name sticks to choose students, have them match the

identifying picture to the significant temperature.

Learning Activity #3

Have images printed onto handouts for students who need to work ahead,
but to also fill out as we work together as a class and students have a
reference sheet.
Review Smart board Activity with matching images to temperature
reading.
Ask students to move the correct parts of the thermometer to the
proper place.

Apply the students knowledge by getting them to take part in an

activity that gets them to identify articles of clothing to the
temperature the thermometer reads.
Observe understanding of pairing the image to the temperature.
Pre assess students ability to read a thermometer.
Closure
Think pair- share.
