Lesson plan 1
DIFF 510
Unit essential questions: What are the rewards in helping others? What are ways to aid others?
What are character traits of people who help others?
Lesson question: What are the rewards in helping others?
Lesson objective: Students will be able to read a text and answer comprehension questions at
their level. Students working on the Phan Ku text will write a short response using context clues
to write a sequencing short essay.
Assessment: The completion of the short sequence essay, or leveled reader comprehension
response.
NYS or other appropriate standard(s) addressed:
Opening: CCSS Literature 5
CCSS Foundational Skills 4
CCSS Foundational Skills 4. B.
Procedure:
Students will popcorn read Phan Ku in their reading street texts
Teacher will stop and cold call students for comprehension questions
Students will then be answer comprehension as the reading occurs
Students will be given must do and may do work
Several students will work on leveled readers
o Reading a related book at their level and answering questions
Other students will be working on writing a short essay response sequencing the events of
Phan Ku
Teacher will pull a group for workshop
Tiered by __________:
3 different tiers
Grade level students will be reading China today and Yesterday
Below grade level will be reading Abuelas Gift
Above grade level will be reading Moving to Mali
o Each of these level readers has comprehension questions at the end that will be
answered on a sheet of paper and handed in

Closure: As a closure students will come back to their seats. Students will then find someone
working on the same task as themselves and will share for about 2 minutes what they were
working on, what they thought was interesting, something they want to know more about etc.
Teacher will then have students hand in their completed work, and the class will line up for their
bathroom break before transitioning to math.
