Honorio Gonzalez- Lesson Plan #4

Human Energy Consumption

The Cooperative Learning Model
The Graffiti Model- pgs. 320-323
10th grade- Science

1. MATERIALS/PREPLANNING
Materials IPads or tablets, pencils and papers, YouTube Videos, Web articles
Vocabulary Human energy consumption, fracking, ozone layer, man-made pollutants,
Literature Each of these models are considered Cooperative Learning models because
they simultaneously promote students development and mastery of academic contents
and reflect five critical attributes. These social learning models capitalize on students
natural inclination to construct knowledge socially while also developing students
ability to interact with peers productively (Kilbane and Milman, 2014, p. 309-310).
2. OBJECTIVE
The students will understand the environment of the planet and how human energy
consumption has impacted the physical environment of the planet and why.
State the Cognitive Taxonomy and/(Affective/ Psychomotor) Level- The level is that of
Synthesis and Evaluation.
List the standards met by this objective- It helps translate quantitative or technical
information expressed in words in a text into visual form (e.g., a table or chart) and
translate information expressed visually or mathematically (e.g., in an equation) into
words. It helps assess the extent to which the reasoning and evidence in a text support
the authors claim or a recommendation for solving a scientific or technical problem. It
helps to compare and contrast findings presented in a text to those from other sources
(including their own experiments), noting when the findings support or contradict
previous explanations or accounts.
3. ASSESSMENT
Key question: Will the students be able to understand the environment of the planet and
how human energy consumption has impacted the physical environment and why it is
important to care about this?
The students will be able to visualize how human energy consumption has impacted the
physical environment of the planet and how important it is to discuss solutions for it. The
students will also be able to identify, explain, and practice the social skill of working
cooperatively with each other, supporting each other, and sharing ideas with each other.
I would assess the students by supervising the interaction between the students in the
dialogue groups and how they practice the social skill of working cooperatively with
each other, supporting each other, and sharing ideas with each other in the group
discussion. I would also measure group and individual learning by assessing them
through a reflection in which they would reflect on everything they had learned. This
would allow me to also grade the students performances on the class activity and with
each other.
My method of assessment would be informal because I would be using a grading rubric
to assess the standards of individual and group learning performance. It would also
assess how the students practice the social skill of working cooperatively with each
1

other, supporting each other, and sharing ideas with each other.
The assessment links with the model the model because it assesses how the group
practices the social skill of working cooperatively with each other, supporting each
other, and sharing ideas with each other. It also grades the reflection through which the
students write everything they have learned in the group discussion. This assessment
also assesses individual and group learning by setting the standards through individual
and group student performances are graded and assessed by the teacher.
Below is a link to the rubrics that I would use:

4. LESSON OPENING/PURPOSE
The students will be able to understand the environment and how human energy
consumption has impacted the physical environment of the planet and why it is
important to find solutions for them. The students will also be able understand how
human methods like fracking for extracting natural gas has impacted the physical
environment of the planet. Students will also be able to understand how man-made
pollutants affect the planets ozone layer and its impact on future generations. Students
will also understand the importance of practicing social skills while participating in class
activities like and why they are important life skills for the students.
I will try to make this lesson very informative and interactive for the students so that they
are able to understand the importance of the lesson they are being taught. I will also try
to help the students understand why the environment of the planet is important to us and
how human energy consumption levels is impacting its physical environment. I will also
try to teach how finding solutions for these problems will help future generations change
their energy consumption levels. I would teach the students that have social skills are
necessary for being an active member of society.
5. MOTIVATION FOR LEARNING
The type of motivation that is being used in the lesson is a mix of both intrinsic and
extrinsic motivation. It is intrinsic because it requires the students to become deep
thinkers in order to share ideas and a participating member of the group. It is extrinsic
because it requires the students practice their social skills in order to be able to
participate with other in a group setting. The students will then be able write a reflection
on what they had learned in their group discussion and also use the social skills learned
here for their daily academic and social lives. The students also their use their tablets to
look at articles and videos discussing the impact of human energy consumption has
impacted the physical environment of the planet and why it is an important topic of
discussion in todays world.
I will try to make this lesson as interactive and informative as possible in order to foster
the students attention on the topic of the class lesson. I would begin by asking the
students what they thought on the current global discussion of the planets environment.
I would then begin the topic of how human energy consumption has impacted all of us in
todays world. I would the use the Smart board in conjunction with the tablets to pass
articles and videos to the students on the class discussion topic. I would also
encourage the students to use these discussions to identify and practice their social
skills and find out more on this topic and expand their horizons on learning.
6. LESSON BODY
Follow the steps provided in the text for the general lesson format. These first steps are
found in most all models.
Adjust this format to match the exact teaching model you are preparing according to the
model description provided in the text. Clarity is the key.
2

Step 1

Central to the Cooperative Learning models is that the students work with each
other in groups to accomplish individual and group learning goals (Kilbane and
Milman, 2014, p. 310). This would allow the students to learn from each other and
also practice their social skills with each other while in-group dialogue. This
would also allow me assess their individual and group learning by having them
write in a reflection everything they shared and discusses in their group dialogue.

Step 2

Students to day you will learn about the planets environment and how human
energy consumption has impacted its physical environment and why it is
important to engage in this topic. You will also learn how current methods for
extracting energy like natural gas with fracking has further impacted the
environment of the planet. You will learn how man-made pollutants have impacted
the planets ozone layer and shortened its shielding capacity for future
generations. You will finally learn how practice the social skill of working
cooperatively with each other, supporting each other, and sharing ideas with each
other and how it will help use throughout your life.

Step 3

- I would begin by preparing the questions that would enable the students to meet
the learning goals of class lesson.
- I would then separate the students into groups in preparation for the groups
discussions in order for them to meet the educational and social interaction
goals of the class lesson.
- I would then explain to the students how the Graffiti model lesson works and
name the educational goals while also answering any of the students question
on the lesson.
- I would then explain the social skills component of the lesson and have the
students identify, explain, and practice the social skill while also setting
accountability standards for the group participation.
- I would then pass out the pencils, papers, and questions to the students so
that they could start the group dialogue.
- I would then supervise the students discussions and assist them whenever
they needed it and also keep track of the time so that the students could
answer the question within time selected time period and then have then
switch questions.
- I would further supervise student group interactions and further provide
assistance when asked while the student groups return to their original group
questions and incorporated all of the groups answers.
- I would then have the groups share their incorporated answers from all the
groups questions.
- I would then measure student and individual accountability by having the
students write reflections and articulate everything they had learned in their
group dialogues.
- I would then assess individual and group student performances through the
guidelines set through the grading rubric.

Step 4

Guide Practice, Assess Performance, and Provide Corrective Feedback

Questioning How has human energy consumption impacted the physical
environment of the planet and why is it important to discuss?
How had man-made pollutants impacted the ozone layer of the planet for
years to come?
Why are practicing social skills in this lesson important for you?
Why is teamwork important in a group setting and how is it learned?
3

Correcting Errors- I will use the grading rubric to assess the students
academic knowledge and student performance in the group discussion and
also grade their group performance in the group discussion.

Step 5
-

Step 6

Assign Independent Practices, Assess Performance, and Provide Corrective

Feedback
I will hand back the graded reflections that the students wrote their responses on to
let the students know their individual and group performance grades. I would also
give them an encouraging remark that I will always be there to assist them should
they ever need it.
Review Periodically Build in review of lesson in future lessons
- I would then at a later date asses the students on the social skills they hade
identified and practiced while in their group discussions by having them
implement those social skills in other class activities. I will also give the
students information on future clean energy alternatives and articles with
methods in which human energy consumption could be lessened in the years
to come.

8. Reflective Thinking/Curriculum Evaluation _50 Points____
Reflection is a very important part of each lesson. Please take the time to thoughtfully
prepare your reflections. Follow the format provided below. Carefully edited and thorough
writing is expected.
SLOs- Candidates earning a master of science in education will be scholar practitioners who in the context of the
Christian worldview:
1. Demonstrate advanced understanding of the trends, issues, and research associated with education in general and
with their respective specialization.
2. Evaluate and conduct research to improve instructional practices and institutional cultures.
3. Employ leadership practices to optimize educational and institutional outcomes.
4. Articulate worldview and perspectives for enhancing student learning.

Reflective Statement for: Graffiti Model

SLO 4- Articulate worldview and perspectives for enhancing student learning.

Relevance: Why is this assignment relevant to demonstrating your competence with this SLO?
4

This assignment is relevant because it fits into the teaching style that I have developed
over the course of this class. This lesson uses the Social Learning perspective, which is a
perspective that I would use as part of my teaching style. Social Learning in itself fits into
a worldview that I have developed over the course of my graduate education. In the social
learning perspective, students have to work in groups and learn from each other in social
learning, which I believe provides them with the social skills needed to be successful in
any educational situation that they may find themselves in the future. With these social
skills the students will be able to advance in their academic studies and in their daily
lives. Thus, this is part of my worldview because anyone given the right set of social and
academic skills will be able to succeed in whatever they set their mind. Those that have
been successful will then be able to assist people that are in similar situations as those
who have succeeded in life once were. Additionally, when I go overseas I will be able to
use this lesson plan to help the students develop the skills needed to communicate in
English effectively. I will be able the worldview that I have developed in college to
enhance the learning perspectives of the students that I would be teaching. This lesson
would provide me with the knowledge and skills needed to prepare the lesson for the
language learners in my classroom. Furthermore, I would be able to use group dialogues
to help my language students discuss a particular English word or phrase that they
previously might have not fully comprehended. I would guide the students by explaining
a little bit on the topic and then have them discuss in a group what they think the word or
phrase meant exactly. This would help the students learn from each other and at the same
time reinforce everything that they had learn about English in order for them to be able to
fully discuss in the group about the words or phrase true meaning. I would then clarify
and fully explain the meaning of the word or phrase to my students and finish the class
lesson then. Thus, this assignment and the theory that covers it would allow me to
enhance student learning by articulating a teaching perspective that I had developed in
college.
Significance - Why is competence with this artifact significant for a professional educator? Using
careful analysis and evaluative thought:

Competence with this model is necessary because it helps the teacher in assisting the students in
reaching levels of deeper learning by having them engage in dialogue with each other on any given
topic. For example, when discussing the topic of understanding how the human energy consumption
has impacted the planets physical environment the students would be able to identify the trends
behind the emergence of these environmental situations. The students would be able to identify how
different circumstances like political, social, economic, and geographic factors have influenced
certain environmental situations around the world in the past few decades like what occurred a few
years ago in the Gulf of Mexico. The students would then be able to determine how different
environmental patterns have either alleviated or worsened environmental situations around the world
in the past few years. Additionally, students would then be able to discuss the ethical considerations
that have accompanied similar discussions on environmental change around the world in the past
few years and how it has done little to change the planets physical environment. While some
progress has been made in this area in the past few years not enough change has been enacted for the
planets environmental situation to ease over the next century. Furthermore, students would be able
to see how different people have different perspectives on the issues like how a politician, historian,
and an economist will have different views and opinions regarding this subject due to a variety of
factors. Therefore, having competence wit this model will assist an educator in teaching students on
how to work in groups and learn from each other at the same time. Moreover, an educator will be
able to help students like English Language Learners develop the skills needed to succeed in an
5

English-speaking environment. Hence, competence in this model will allow an educator to add to
their educational teaching strategies while also helping them enhance student learning with this
teaching perspective.
Link to Theory - How is this artifact supported by a competent research base?

A competent research base supports this model because it falls under the umbrella of the Social
Learning theory. Under the Social learning theory, the role of a teacher is that of a facilitator and
flexible who is required to have a high level of interpersonal and instructional skills in order to
be able to properly respond to the needs of the students. The students have to learn from each
other by becoming a primary part each others process of knowledge construction. Therefore,
participation would become of primary importance for the educational learning of the students.
Cooperation would be needed between the students in the classroom-learning environment in
order for learning to occur. Thus, in the Graffiti model the students would have to engage each
other in conversation in order for ideas to be shared and for the students to learn from each other
through dialogue. The group dialogue would also allow the students to practice social skills that
would enable them to only work as a team but also give them the educational skills needed to
succeed in any educational goals they may have set for themselves. Additionally, this also fits
into the Big Idea that learners benefit from hearing or reading the ideas of others. Since the
learners are in-group dialogue with each other they are able to shares ideas and thereby share
knowledge that will lead them to learn reinforce everything that they have learned so far in the
group dialogue. Thus, the learners are able to expand their knowledge base when in dialogue
with each other and benefit from hearing each others ideas on whatever the dialogue may be
about.
Resources/Technology- What technology did you select to support this lesson? Include interactive
applications and videos any/all technology suitable.

The technology that I used were videos from YouTube and tablets since these would be
the most helpful in an English Language Learning and Science class. These technology
items benefited me the most based on the lesson I would be present the class with.
Professional Actions/Areas for growth - What are your next professional steps in this area to keep
moving forward as a professional?

The next steps that I will take in order to keep moving forward would be to keep on learning
more educational teaching strategies that will enable to keep adapting my teaching strategies in
order to better enhance student learning. Going overseas will also enable me to expand my
worldview in order for the teaching experience I wish to obtain while abroad. I will able to learn
from new teaching strategies that will enable me to enhance the language learning of the students
that I may one day have. I will also be able to articulate my worldview to my students through
my teaching strategies, which will help further their language learning at a faster rate. The
students will also be able to know what type of teacher I am through how they perceive my
teaching strategies. They will then begin to trust in me more as a teacher which will allow me to
get to know them better thereby allowing to adapt my teaching style to fit the individual needs of
each student in the classroom. This will be possible because of how I have gotten to know the
students better through which I am able to know in what area of language learning the students
need improvement in. However, being a professional in the field of international education will
require me to keep learning by always improving and adapting my teaching styles and
6

educational philosophy. Therefore, being an educator will require the teacher to always be
willing to improve and adapt to the situation, which a good educator will always do and therefore
continue to thrive in the field of international education.
