Assessment Analysis Reading Street
Assessment Analysis Reading Street
3rd Grade Reading Street: reading, vocabulary, contractions, and comprehension assessment
Objective: The students will read, and apply comprehension in understanding vocabulary and
contractions by answering questions thereafter.
Before the summative assessment was administered to students on Friday; they received
daily preparation. Students reviewed the story, How Do you Raise a Raisin? We read it together
as a class. Students learned vocabulary words which included contractions, vocabulary amazing
words from the book (nature, wildlife, teem, elevation, admire, jumble, tame, stumble, trek, and
backpack). Lastly, students learned and applied an understanding to conclusions and how to look
for them throughout the text.
On the first day, students were introduced to the story by watching a video called, How
Do you Raise a Raisin? The video was about people, nature and their connection. In addition the
video included vocabulary words. After the video, the class read the story together, and through
class discussion students answered several questions about the story. For example, what's the
conclusion of the first page of the story? What type of genre?
Prior to the lesson, as a class, we went through vocabulary activities on
pearsonsuccess.net. Students stated the word, read the definition, and the sentence. This activity
was followed by a memory match activity where students read the sentence and located the word
within several words choices. The next day I taught a lesson on contractions. I defined and
discussed contractions with the class. As I wrote the contractions on the board, student
volunteers gave the combining two words. As a class we repeated this a few more times.
Students wrote the rest of the combining two words on line paper. After, students watched a
video on contractions. Students took a contractions worksheet home for homework.
Also for the amazing words we read a story called, Saving the Bears. Students identified
vocabulary words throughout the reading and were able to understand the meaning. Afterwards,
students as a class, played vocabulary trivia on the whiteboard via internet. On their own
students completed a worksheet.
Lastly, I defined conclusion, using examples from the book, and while students read each
page they identified conclusions. As a class I worked from the Elmo while students worked from
their desk. I called on student volunteers, I wrote examples from the Elmo, and students wrote
conclusions at their desk from pages in the reading. For homework students read and wrote a
conclusion of a story.
When the assessment was turned in, I found the following results:
Mean= 69.03
Median=69
Mode=59, 66, 70, 76, and 80
When analyzing the assessment, I found that students received low scores on drawing
conclusions in a story. Of the twenty-six students who answered the questions on drawing
conclusions twenty-three percent of the students passed this section, which is six students. The
test required students to identify vocabulary, break down contractions, and answer questions on
drawing conclusions. Because most students failed in drawing conclusions I would increase
formative assessing in class. I would also reteach the lesson and include more example in class
and have students practice for homework. In addition I would also provide further instruction
with the vocabulary amazing words. For example, students would create sentences using those
words, I would have them partner up and have discussion about the words, and provide
homework practice.
