Getting students engaged

Today we will be learning about a fascinating animal that most of us may have not seen in
real life, the Great Grey Owl.
Asking questions like:
What does an owl look like?
What information do you know about owls?
About what size is an owl?
What do owls eat?
Procedure
We will then read some online sources that I have gathered to learn much more about
owls. And together we will come up with a list of facts! The facts will be charted on the
board so that the students are able to come up and see them while they are working on
their booklet.

The activity consists of students making a small informational booklet on owls based on
drawings. We will work on the table of contents together and it will look something like
this:

Chapter 1: What does a Great Grey Owl look like?

Chapter 2: Habitat
Chapter 3: Whats for dinner?
Chapter 4: Whats special about me?
Chapter 5: Family life
For each chapter the students will first make a drawing based on the title. For example on
chapter one, they can draw an owl. Under their drawing they will write at least three
sentences with the information learned in the first part of the lesson.
They will do these for all five chapters in their writing journal. This can be in black and
white.
Assessment
Once they are done with their draft I will check them on their grammar and the relevance
between their drawing and the text.
Final product
Students will transfer their draft on to half sized sheet of white paper. Their final booklets
will consist of a cover page, table of contents and a page for each chapter!

Modifying for children with disabilities

Give instructions in more than one way

Grouping them up with other students so they can work together on their
individual projects

Allow extra time for completion

Give two grades on written work: one for creative content and the other for
mechanics (spelling, grammar, punctuation).
