Canada in the Middle

East

Pros
1. Keeps people employed.
The Canadian military employs around 119,000
personale.

2. Helps to keep terrorism in check.

3. Creates and maintains peace there

and abroad.
October 2002 Canada joined the U.S. and Britain in
operation enduring freedom.
November 21 2009 Canada played a big part in a
NATO ran operation called operation attention
meant to train Afghan personale (police & military)
that would bring stabilization to the country. (insert
clip of a nationals response on canadas training
mission)

Cons
1.

Waste of tax payers money.

2001 to 2012, when Canada was in combat in

Afghanistan. The mission's incremental cost
was $8.4 billion.
Cost of Operation attention should not exceed
399 million.

2. Takes our focus off important tasks,

like humanitarian needs.

As a result of our focus on airspace, we neglected the

needs on the ground needs that $50 million could have
gone a long way toward filling. For instance, that money
could have provided medical aid, food, and clean
drinking water to the victims of war, and provided
sufficient resources to deal with the explosive remnants
of war that litter city blocks, and are too often picked up
and accidently detonated by children. (Rahal Singh)
speaking about the recent mission to Libya.

3. Innocent people die.

April 18 2002 4 Canadian soldiers died in
friendly fire by a U.S. F-16
18,000- 20,000 civilians died in the war on
terror.
It is estimated by the Canadian Forces, that 8% -or just over 3,200 soldiers --- will be diagnosed
with post-traumatic stress disorder. (Sophie
Desrosiers, Ottawa Sun)

Canada is a responsible country concerning its military

involvement. We see other countries as human beings that
have rights and needs as we do and do what we can to
ensure that we and others can live in safe and terror free
countries. It is important that a country lives in freedom
and knows how to do so; therefore Canada played an
important role in Afghanistan from 2001 till now, helping
to rebuild a country that deserves freedom form terrorism.

Conclusion

Questions
1. What triggered the war on terrorism?
2. Was the war in Afghanistan necessary?
