Phil1120 TR

I took this class because of Phil1000 last semester, in which we just touched on ethics,
and I wanted to know more. The controversy of moral and ethics is so interesting to me for
some reason. Growing up, bouncing back between living with my dad in Sugar House, and then
going with my mom in Bountiful, I was sort of exposed to this Diversity I guess you could say,
with my dad and my friends it was mostly Catholicism, and being in Bountiful is like Mormon
headquarters. It was odd to me that, even though both sides of my family believed in god and
had similar practices, they were radically different in their living, and it made me sort of
question which one is to be followed. Now that Im older, I like to consider myself a conditioned
existentialist. We can create who we are, and follow our own way of living, because this, in a
way, sort of gives me the feeling of true freedom.
The most influential subjects this semester was the whole topic of moral relativism and,
again, Nietzsche. I feel like relativism is where truth rests, it makes too much sense and has a
lot of backing to not be. Nietzsche on the other hand, is someone I admire. I had the privilege to
witness to a conference about him, with rock star nerds of professors, whom reek of
knowledge, was the highlight of my year. I feel like he is a man who had too much time to think,
but unfortunately of his passing, he might have stared into the abyss too long.
Philosophy, even though the academic performance is poor, has really been influential
to me this year, and is something that has changed me for the better (I think). Its ideas and
theories help me sort of live an unbiased life, which I feel is the most noble.
